I live in MD and in this area grognard always referred to an older experienced wargamer. And that's fromthe 70's fo rme at least.
I've had fantasy football teams named the Grognards. It was/is meant as a positive term not a derrogatory one.

The use of the term "Grognard" that I have heard is to refer to a serious tabletop wargamer, who usually plays old out-of-print war games that are usually complex. Definitely a war gamer term though, not a term to describe someone who plays RPGs.......

Grognard is commonly used online to reference a serious wargamer. It may be someone who annoyingly can recite every rule, but he definitely plays the game to back it up.

I have noticed more and more that the term Grognard is being defined as 'serious gamer'. However, as an old timer in the RPG and gaming arena, I believe the term 'Grognard' refers to a person who annoyingly claims to know every rule and strategy for a given RPG, but never actually plays the game.

I don't know if it's a regional thing (I'm in the Southwest), but that term has had that definition at least since the early 80's.

Just my opinon and looking for some justification on the matter. Thanks.
