My husband, Lewis Smith was also a "L" pilot. he passed away this past June. he was a friend of "Sabo" and was in touch with him until shortly before Sabo's death. Aslo they had a friend from Miami, Alton Ward which they also kept in touch with until his Alton's death. Lewis would have been 100 yrs old on Sept 4th this year. Lewis or "Smitty' as they called him was an experienced pilot when he enlisted and had the rank of Master Sgt. Lewis enlisted in the Ga National Guard in april of 1941, which was activated in Sept of 1941. At some point he was put into the 109th tac Recon Sq from Minnesota. According to is log books he flew several different types of planes but mostly L-5. After the surrender of Germany his log book indicates that he flew several German planes both single and twin engines.
