Civil War gamers should definitely take a look at "Scourge of War: Brandy Station." There's a learning curve, but the game does a good job of modeling the battle in which Union cavalry of the Eastern Theater came into its own.

"Guns of Galicia" is a boardgame of World War I's Eastern Front. The two sides wear each other down quickly and have to husband forces for a final push - or a last-stand defense. Easy to play, it can serve as a gateway to more complex games.
