Norwich University Cadet Receives First ACG History Award

Admiral Richard W. Schneider (U.S. Coast Guard, retired), president of Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont, announced during an April 3, 2007, ceremony that Cadet Mark Saville was the first recipient of the Armchair General Magazine History Award. Saville, a member of Norwich University’s Corps of Cadets, graduates this year with a double major (history and criminal justice) and will be commissioned in the U.S. Marine Corps. He has already completed Marine Officer Candidate School, where he was an honor graduate with the highest leadership score in his class.

The annual ACG History Award recognizes an outstanding Norwich University history student and features a $500 cash award. The university provided a matching grant, and Saville will use the money to pursue graduate degree studies in Norwich’s acclaimed Master of Military History program.

April 3, 2007. Renowned historian and ACG advisory board member Carlo D’Este presents a $500 check to Norwich University Cadet Mark Saville, the first recipient of the ACG History Award, at the Colby Writer’s Symposium banquet hosted by Norwich.

ACG advisory board member Carlo D’Este, a distinguished historian and best-selling biographer, delivered the award to Cadet Saville during the university’s annual William F. Colby Military Writers’ Symposium, saying, “Armchair General can really be proud of a very impressive young man. It’s a really fine beginning for this award to go to someone we can all be proud of. He will make an outstanding Marine officer.”

President Schneider thanked ACG for establishing the award, noting that Saville is “an excellent student and outstanding individual … a wonderful recipient for this first award.”

Armchair General publisher, Eric Weider, responded, “I am simply honored to play a small part in helping this great American on his journey.”
