Joe Rosenthal, the photographer who captured the flag raising on Iwo Jima, died Sunday at age 94. Full details can be found at the USA Today website. (link)
Mr. Rosenthal worked for the San Francisco Chronicle for a good portion of his career, and the Chronicle has an extended tribute to him. Notably reserved, he said of his famous photo -"I took the picture, The Marines took Iwo Jima." Read more about him here.
Sadly, Armchair General was going to highlight his work in an upcoming issue showing Mr. Rosenthal’s famous photograph of the flag raising on Mt. Suribachi and other articles on Iwo Jima, the Marine Corps’ bloodiest Pacific battle — including an exclusive History in Depth article by noted historian Richard B. Frank. You can still check it out in the November issue of the magazine, on newsstands September 19, but it won’t be the same knowing this iconic photograph’s creator is no longer around.
