You raise your rifle and target the nearest soldier. You give him a slight lead and fire, killing him instantly. Even as he crumples and falls, you fire again, mortally wounding another German soldier. The muzzle flash from your Garand betrays your position and the Germans open fire. You are in the open and have nowhere to seek cover and concealment. Mud and water splatters all around you as the Germans approximate your position. Suddenly a round penetrates your knee and you drop your rifle in agony, clutching at the fragmented joint. Another round passes through your hip and you realize that it was foolhardy to fire on the German patrol. The next round slams into your neck and you fall dead into the cold muck of Normandy.
