The Battle For Basing House – An English Civil War Re-Enactment

A J Summersgill May 04, 2005  |  Single Page |  0 comments  | Print  | E-mail

Following from my previous Battlefield Tour of Basing House here at ACG, I recently took another trip to this ruined stately home to watch a re-enactment of the final battle that saw its demise.

Organised by the Sealed Knot, the re-enactment took place on the grounds of Basing House itself, and featured some 200 men (and women!) in faithfully recreated uniforms and equipment from the era. Readers of my previous article will recall that Basing House was a Royalist stronghold during the Civil War and that it was besieged by Parliamentarian forces and ultimately stormed and destroyed in October 1645.

The Sealed Knot was formed in 1968 and consists of some 3,000 members nationwide, all of them volunteers, with the aim of recreating historical battles from the era of the English Civil War (1642 – 1651) and enhancing knowledge of this important period of English history.

The following pictures were taken either with a Sony DSC-P12 Cyber-Shot digital camera, or with a Sony DCR-PC101E PAL Camcorder. My thanks to my friend Roach for assisting me with the camera work so that we could have two cameras on the go at once!
