Wayne’s Green Berets are the “cavalry” and the Viet Cong are the “Indians” in this simplistic morality play. The sun shown setting over the South China Sea (it is actually east of Vietnam) is just one of the many goofs in this flawed Eastern “Western.”
Platoon (1986)
Director Oliver Stone
MGM
Released 2001
Rated R

Many veterans wondered in what war Oliver Stone had served when this Vietnam War movie joined the plethora of others released during the mid-1980s. However, the well-staged combat scenes – particularly the climactic night attack – were the film’s redeeming feature and were likely due to the participation of ex-Marine Dale Dye.
