George S. Patton in the 1912 Olympics – Book Excerpt

By Armchair General | Military History Books |  Published: August 17, 2010 at 2:10 pm

Hard-charging World War II commander General George S. Patton, Jr., is the subject of a new, compact biography, one of the first two titles in The Generals, an emerging line from Thomas Nelson publishers. The company is best known as a major publishing house for Christian-themed books, some of which have dipped into history before, such as Seeds of Turmoil, Bryant Wright’s examination of the origins of the Middle East conflict.

Each of the 10 books planned for The Generals series will focus on "A particular personality trait and (examine) how it influenced the subject in the crucible of war," according to a media release from the publisher. In Patton’s case the personality trait is his "steely and indomitable determination."

An Armchair General review of Patton and the other debut title, Lee, are currently in the works, but in the meantime, we arranged with Thomas Nelson to provide an excerpt for ACG‘s readers. This chapter focuses on the future general’s experiences 1910–1913, particularly his performance in the 1912 Summer Games at Stockholm, Sweden. An number of photos from the book are included.
