Uhm. . .the railguns are projectile weapons. Railguns are nothing but giant barrels that use magnetic accelerators to shoot giant solid metal slugs or rocks at hypervelocity.

Details :P

Besides, Prometheus uses smart-ass fellow officers for railgun ammunition - fortunately there always seems to be a plentiful supply

One of the middle Ships of the Queen Elizabeth Class, the Dauntless was a bit of an experiment. Designers had listened to the Battlecruiser captains before, who had complained that their 'bow chaser' armament of lasers was too short-ranged to engage in a fleet engagement. Also, single broadsided turrets for the mounted railguns meant they could only put a few of them to bear on targets to the front, and none to the rear. Many considered this to be a fatal design flaw, what with the main use of the BC to be the vanguard or rearguard of the fleet.

The Dauntless was the "Mid-Class redesign", not considered a big enough change to justify a new class, and miraculously snuck under the noses of politicians and bureaucrats.

She was the first Battlecruiser to mount extended range railguns in her bow. More than half of the 60 laser armament had to be removed in the redesign, but 2 of the massive railguns (comparable in range and weight of fire to those turret mounted on the Freedom II) were laid down in her center, flanked by only 10 lasers above and below in the forward batteries. Her other 10 lasers, in battery between the engines to the rear, remained untouched.

Her 12 standard Railguns were mounted in doubled turrets, stacked in a superfiring fashion, with 4 forward and 2 rear turrets (split between upper and lower surface decks on the centerline). This allowed the BC to put as many as 10 railguns against an enemy to her front, as opposed to the 6 of previous designs. The 2 rear turrets, along with lower central turret (superfiring) allowed a maximum of 6 guns in the rear arc, as opposed to 2-4 on previous designs. The bridge tower and sensor suite blocked the upper center turret from firing in a 30 deg arc to the rear.

Gun Decks 1,2,5 & 6 bristled with 100 plasma projectors apiece. Firing in broadside, and tightly packed, the projectors have only a limited traverse of a few degrees, and are normally fired directly from either the Bridge or the Weapons Control center in the heart of the ship, as opposed to the more more autonomous lasers, missiles, and railgun turrets. Compartmented behind the projectors were the massive capacitors which took up much of the ship's bulk. Designed for speed, capacitors were necessary to allow the 3 reactors along the Keel to power the engines and shields to their full capacity while using the weapons. But the capacitors meant that careful husbandry of power must be used, as a simultaneous double-broadside of all weapons could drain all the capacitors down to near-critical levels at once.

The only shipboard weapons with independent capacitors are the 50 point defense clusters, split between decks 3 and 4. More of the 'traditional' laser, these lightspeed clusters are automated and designed simply to hit incoming missiles, mines, drones, and fighters. They're not powerful enough to be an anti-ship weapon, except maybe against a freighter. They are controlled only from the central Fire Direction Center at the heart of the ship. This was one more concession to the 'fleet' captains that had been made since the first ship of the QE class. While not quite as all encompassing as a Flag level FDC, these BCs did have an FDC capable of linking together the BCs targetting data and point defense setup with up to 3 other ships. This allows the Dauntless to wrap herself and 3 other cruisers in a singularly minded barrage of shields and point defense, making them a much harder target for missile or fighter based forces to assail.

The other weapons on decks 3 and 4 are the Missile launchers. Consisting of little more than extremely short-barrelled railguns, the launchers themselves have no traverse whatsoever. The missiles, loaded one at a time from the very narrow magazine that runs right down the centerline of the ship, consist of little more than a homing sensor, a thermonuclear warhead, and a suicidally overpowered reaction drive. At their slowest setting, the missiles have nearly the range of a railgun, but they are much slower. At extremely close 'sprint' ranges, missiles are nearly as fast as laser 'bolts' and are normally only stoppable by pulse-lasers and point defense laser clusters. The one advantage missiles get is that they can track a manuevering target, which makes them great for dealing with small vessels that don't mount much in the way of antifighter/missile weaponry, as well as laying down a barrage of fire to the front or rear, as missiles can manuever post-launch, unlike other weapons.

In her single fighter bay, Dauntless has room for 2 squadrons of fighters, or a squadron and 4 dropships for raids. On raiding missions there is room for only a paltry 200 troopers on board the ship, as she was never made for heavy invasion manuevers, and gives up most of her interior spaces to weapons and shields.

In her rear arc are 4 launch racks. Each rack has 100 drone-mines mounted in it. This was unchanged from the original design concept that if a QE class couldn't force the enemy to disengage, it could drop a minefield behind itself that would give it time to escape. However, the dangers of so many bombs quite literally between the engines resulted in the rack doors being one of the most heavily armored portions of the ship. Excepting the doors, the Bridge herself, the Missile Decks and magazine(missiles blowing up can be tricky), the reactors themselves, and the railgun turrets, much of the remainder of the ship is unarmored against any but fighter weaponry. The decks are heavily compartmentalized and can be remotely vented to space as a fire-control measure.

Yet even with the lessened armor and heavy reliance on her battleship grade shields to stop incoming rounds, the Dauntless crew remains in a 'shirt-sleeve' environment. Unlike some battleline ships that wear vac-suits into combat, only engineering and damage-control parties wear the bulky protective suits. Also owing to her lack of armor, Dauntless mounts more viewports than the average warship of her size, giving her a very open feel.

Captain Sair Yonka had much of the say in the Dauntless' construction, as it was his previous experience in an older battlecruiser that encouraged the design changes. It has been said that he was offered a Titan class BB, but turned it down, saying that slugging it out in a major battle had none of the 'elegance' of the more 'adventurous' operations of the BCs and cruisers of the fleet. He is a calculating commander, and under his tutelage the gunners and gunnery officers of the Dauntless have become adept at extreme-range shots on the railguns, jokingly calling themselves the 'snipers' of the fleet. Knowing his ship operates alone much of the time, and without the ability to stand toe-to-toe against an undamaged BB, Captain Yonka has pioneered the use of missiles in intrasystem attacks, launching them on orbital paths around planetary bodies before activating them in ambush at close range, where the Dauntless herself is shielded from railgun or laser reprisal by the planet, moon,or asteroid.

Captain Yonka is known as a bit of a buccaneer, and while his quality is rarely disputed as a scout and cruiser commander, the Dauntless and the ships under his command tend to share his somewhat cynical view of regulations and decor, leading to both the rather mild issue of piratical garb and personal weapons (knives and pistols) being worn by non-Marine crewmen, and the more troublesome knack of his cruiser squadron operating independently of any fleet. Some admirals have complained openly that Captain Yonka's "Swashbuckler Squadron" doesn't operate by their leave, but that their fleets operate by his.

Hmm.

We seem to be missing supply ships. I know we have some replicators but we still need mining ships to gather raw material.

heh, cool.

I think that the carriers should have a replicator on board big enough to create fighters and drop ships so as to decentralise the supply issue.

whats your thought son size issues for a medium size replicator and how does the fleet handle sailor resupply?

Also, there are dedicated troopships that haven't been detailed.

EDIT: Carriers carry replcatiors (heven't I mentioned this? damm!) large enough to make fighters. Dropships are corvette sized, and are already part of the fleet.

Everyones "Mind" is in a "Bank" in the Repositiory, the R can bring all dead saliors back to life via clones.

The Pendragon is a new direction of thought for Capital ship operations.

Known as the 'kings' of the battlefields the Dreadnoughts and larger classes supplanted the Battleship as the largest long-range weapons platforms created by humanity, but it was discovered that these vessels were as damaging to their own allies as their enemies in mass or 'melee' engagements- they simply packed too much punch.

Their reliance on long-range batteries made them more vulnerable at close ranges when faced with large numbers of smaller enemies.

In an attempt to balance this handicap of the largest capital ships being unable to engage the enemy in these circumstances for fear of damaging or outright destroying their smaller fellows in the process the Pendragon program was initiated

The Pendragon incorporates the armour of a dreadnought with the armament of a battleship and cruiser combined. Sacrificing maximum speed and large numbers of long-range weaponry for the ability to engage multiple enemies at close range it carries the concept of ship to ship engagements to the highest level.

Fighters act as a tertiary defensive screen and offensive weapon both.
The legion of Armoured marines act as boarding parties seeking to cripple or preferable capture enemy vessels thereby enabling the enemy's resources to be turned against them as the ships are placed under remote control of the Pendragon's secondary battle-bridge.

The Marines make use of gun-dropships, and Assault drop-pods for ground attacks, the dropships being fitted and designed to fight alongside and support the marines in sustained combat. The Assault drop-pods are two man vehicles, armoured and pilotable, containing advanced defensive suites and can be used as Armoured Personal Firebases upon landing.

The marines also egress from the Pendragon herself to board other ships as well as using the drop-ships. They incorprate the weaponry to make their own doors in the enemy vessels if one cannot be found.

The Pendragon is also revolutionary in regards to it's very construction as the entire hull has been created with a new technique known as Point Singularity Welding. The gravitational forces of Point Singularities ( Focused black holes) are used to forge and weld the alloys together making for a metal compressed and harder than anything previously known.

Though she does mount long-range weapons (few compared to her larger bretheren) the bulk of her offensive capabilities are mounted on her weapons-decks intended for mid-close range broadside combat.

She mounts so many energy weapons she actually carries dual reactors. the standard configuration applies to her Primary which supplies power to all ship systems and weapons as per most ships, while her Secondary powers weapons systems alone. Her reactors are also her most heavily protected modules as they are her largest vulnerability. She carries almost three times the rector shielding that a normal reactor module would.

Because of the increased vulnerability she has an added defensive measure being considered for the Dreadnought and heavier classes...
A Roche-field projector has been deisgned and incorporated into her construction. This allows her to create a Mass-effect field similar to that created by large celestial bodies ( planets) enabling her to smash obstructions out of her way. This is useful when in high-speed flight as her manueverability is compromised by her weight/inertia. it has been considered but not yet tested as a possible weapon in it's own right.

Unlike other larger ships or even other ships in her own Titan class there is little room not used. Free space is at a minimum and the entire compliment has been tested for claustrophobia as it is a very real danger aboard the Pendragon.

Her Captain Emrys MacAthol was is her designer. He was invoilved in the program from it's inception and has turned his decades of experience in various classes of ship into seeing this created and done correctly. He created a ship that could fight large numbers of enemy and emerge victorious. It is said he hated 'standing back and watching the smaller fish slug it out'

He is developing 'Shield-wall technology' aiming to perfect the art of multiple vessels being able to mesh their energy sheilds and fight as a united whole. He admits however that that lies in the future, whereas the priority is in the present.

He has successfully completed the Pendragons 'trials' which others in Command have likened to full scale wars. To which he has replied that simulation has no place in a war. He has successfully blooded and trained his crews to their new assignments and his un-orthodox tactics and looks forward to using them on the enemy in large scale.

He has sailed and fought from the Terran Ring to the Outer-reach. and his crew has followed him with undying loyalty. He considers them as extensions of his will and indeed they operate like it. Each is prized for their initiative and creativity. He has trained them to act together and independently when the situation requires.

Of all the commanders he has fought beside Captain Sair Yonka, creator of the Dauntless is the most like him in individuality and freedom of thought and action.
Indeed it was Captain Yonka's adoption of the use of use of missile weaponry and it's successful employment which inspired his own use of them in the Pendragon.

As Vessels of the fleet are concerned The Pendragon is a Stand-alone ship. Called a Bastard ( though never to Captain MacAthol or the crews hearing) she is considered a blasphemy, neither fish nor fowl. The Captain understands this sentiment but cares about it not at all. All he cares about is getting the job done and surviving fit to fight again. Which is what the Pendragon is designed for.

On railguns, an excellent missive from Tac ...

Dashy....

I'm kind of spitballing here that there would be several classes of railgun being used simultaneously due to the huge variance in ship size. Here's kind of the general thing I've got going:

Ex. Range Railguns: turrets on the freedom II and maybe even the repository due to their large size, but too large to be anything but keel mounted on BBs, BCs, and BAs.

Standard Railguns: The 16"ers of the game, standard in turrets on all large capital ships. Carriers and heavy cruisers could carry them in single turrets, while the bigger ships could carry them in multiple turrets if so desired. I guess standard cruisers or CL could carry 1-2 keel-mounted

Light Railguns: These would be frigate killers, kind of like punching out a .50 cal sniper rifle round rather than a 25mm round. Same range as standard railguns, so they're outside the range of lasers, but smaller and less damaging rounds. Carriers and cruisers would be the candidates for these, with Frigates only being able to carry them as keel mounted bow chasers.

Anything with less mass or range than a light railgun would be better served by lasers, so they wouldn't be made at all.

I guess scince everyone else is getting harcore about their ships I may as well get to it.

Freedom MKII

High Admiral Dashy is one of the oldest people alive. He was the first to recive a new body in the form of a clone in 2160, a ceremonial event that changed history, Immortaility was noe feasible.

Born in Surrey to the great-grandson of the illustiorus Admrial Dashy and grand son of the Admrial Dashy who caommanded british troops on the falklands, Dashy's destiny was tied to the sea. the architect of the eurasian clongomerate's fall in 2103, Dashy is quite possibly the most well known military commander to have ever exsited. He once again showed his mettle at the battle of Alpha, many years after World War 3, and aginst an enemy far more savage and merciless than the eurasian dynasty.

At over 500 years old, Admrial Dashy is considered to be the father of the Space fleet, and an immensly powerful political power. He instigated the "Repositiory" project and has personally desgined half the ships in the EPIC forces.

His current flagship, the Freedom MKII mounts a heavier armament than any ship known to exsist, bar the moon sized "Star Slayers" of some outer rim fleets.

The Main Armament of the Freedom is its huge Railguns, each over a kilometer in lenght, they are able to launch projectiles at near light speed toward their target, imapcting with devastating effect.

the mid range armament is no laughing matter either, battery upon battery of laser cannons adorn the broadsides, so many that even the massive generators on the Freedom are incapable of powering two full broadsides.

Freedom is also coated in clusters of fighter defense, and has enough small pulse lasers to destroy a carriers entire wing of fighters in a few minutes. Freedom also has a large fighter bay, containing over 200 fighters and bombers of various makes, along with the Admrials personal Yacht, Interceptor, a Light Cruiser armed exculsively with plasma projectors and point defense pulse lasers.

when earth was attacked by the Garathkan, Admiral Dashy boarded the Freedom and ordered a clone of himself to be made to lead the exodus, due to the lack of time for personality conditioning, the Clone, though it has the Admirals memories, may form a different personailty on the journey ahead.

Attica is the flagship of the new Democracy class fleet carriers. Big and fast, with an adequate array of defensive weapons, the Democracy class is designed to be able to scare anything it can't run away from. The Democracy class is designed to be faster than anything its size.

It has two light railguns in rear facing centreline mounts above and below for use in a stern chase while is gets up enough speed to escape.

The Democracy class has two battlecruiser sized reactors to handle its speed, replicator and powerful shields. Armour is limited to reactor, drives and munitions.

Missile launchers are clustered along the sides of the hanger modules and have a secondary purpose to put large amounts of chaff into space to help hide the Attica from enemy missiles and to degrade laser and plasma performance.

Attica is not designed for a stand up fight against a Battlecruiser or above but rather is designed to handle the attacks of fighter or smaller ships as well as fend off large scale missile attacks.

As well as her own defences Attica has the ability to link the fire Control of other vessels with a full Flag Level FDC.

Attica contains an internal replicator enabling her to churn out new fighters, drones and missiles at will.

The Attica has space for a double complement of pilots and enough troops to fill its dropships.

The Democracy class is yet to prove itself in battle but has had significant success in fleet exercises, drawing off screening elements and outrunning capital ships the Attica drove several fleet commanders to distraction.

I'd be interested in claiming a CV, but I got school so put me as a maybe. I'll see if I'll have the free time to do this without staying up late.
