@Ogilvy

The Railguns are in turrets?

@Khryses

The BB Class has been renamed Titan.

The way I'm planning the story, all the Titan class are complete hulls lacking weaponary, when the slightly damaged Freedom MKII arrives and announces the thousand odd ships chasing it, the shipyards at Alpha have enough time to make any sort of armament.

and with slowing lasers, this is Sci Fi, it dosen't need to be possible.

Armament of our choice?

Very nice

When I'm writing up the ship classes (today/night) in armament/damage tables I'll be deliberately vague for the Titan class - Primary Broadside armament and Secondary Broadside armament as opposed to 'Pulse-lasers' and 'Plasma projectors' - so that they can be built as desired.

Myriad of the Prometheus

In 2348, Earth was dying. So many of her resources were tied up - or burnt up altogether - in keeping her immense overpopulation alive, that it was clearly only a matter of time before the whole ramshackle system fell apart and people began starving.

The EPIC - or those powers who would become EPIC - had tried the obvious solution, terraforming the other planets in the solar system... but it was clear that it would be a slow process at best. Astronomers had detected signs of a habitable world even as close as Alpha Centauri, but without the means to get there in any useful timeframe. Generation ships had been dispatched... but with no knowing when or if they would arrive, Earth could ill-afford to keep pouring her dwindling resources into a project with such low return. Without FTL travel, Earth seemed doomed to be buried under her own burgeoning population.

It was then that the Nova Kong Research Institute - based in a facility in geostationary orbit above the old city of Hong Kong - developed a primitive version of the ZTT-drive. By harnessing a shackled black-hole, a powered body could accelerate to a staggering degree with only minimal fuel expense. For a time it seemed that the problem of faster-than-light travel had been solved - Earth was saved!

Unfortunately it quickly became apparent that while the ships themselves could (and did) accelerate off madly into the blackness, they didn't seem to be coming back. The first attempts at a manned flight came to similar conclusions, with none the wiser. A number of more exotic solutions were tried - one of them an amalgam of biological and cybernetic elements controlling the vessel. In the end, through trial and error the solution was found - a comparatively low-powered manned flight with a programmed backup course revealed to the NKRI that the sheer G-force of the acceleration was overloading the inertial compensators and killing whatever crews were assigned to the research vessels. Why precisely this led to the implosive destruction of any vessel approaching c was unclear, but was taken to be a vindication of Einstein's theory of relativity; while interstellar travel was now immensely cheaper, it was still going to be a matter of generation ships lumbering off between the stars with little or no immediate return.

That all changed in 2363, when the research vessel Fire returned to Earth via ZTT-jump. The distributed-point cybernetic organism controlling the ship had (over two years!) analysed what had happened to it during its test-flight, gained a rudimentary sapience and correctly worked out a return course to the Sol-system - not so incidentally providing a successful example of FTL travel. For the next couple of years humanity expanded frantically, enjoying her newfound stellar birthright - until plowing headlong into the expansionist Garathkan fleets.

With the advent of war the Research Institute's DiPCO dropped out of the public eye, but owing to a series of hard-fought legal battles on behalf of rival research teams the ruling was made that the DiPCO was in fact an independent sapient being - with all the rights as a citizen of EPIC that this entailed - and as such could not be the property of any one facility but rather should be free to share its research data with all. While this certainly led to a more rapid expansion of EPIC's battlefleet than might have otherwise been expected (with a certain... beneficial bolstering to the resources at High Admiral Dashy's command), the law of unexpected consequences led to the hybrid organism removing itself from the research sphere altogether over the hundred years of peace and establishing itself as an officer in the rapidly expanding EPIC navy. Instead of serving humanity, the organism identifying itself as Myriad would protect and defend it - and so it is with no small irony that Myriad finds themselves commander of the Prometheus at Alpha Centauri, currently being refitted at the sizable naval base there in preparation for the anticipated Garathkan attack.

Basic Weapons stats:

Railguns: Good at Long to extremely long ranges, due to the nature of the projectile acceleration, the larger the rail gun, the more powerful the impact.

Laser-Cannons
Good at mid ranges, mediocre at long and short ranges. barrel size doesn't matter, so many can be mounted but aren't as effective as a high velicity railgun.

Pulse Lasers
short range, shoot many laser projectiles at a faster rate, at the cost of accuracy, used as anti frigate, corvette and fighter weaponary.

Plasma Projectors.
blunderbuss-esque plasma launchers only good at "Knife range" used of bombers, corvettes, frigates, destroyers, battleships and battlecruisers.
