Soldiers Angels

http://soldiersangelsgermany.org/

Some folks understanding that we cant depend on the government or DoD have taken up a bit of the load. A lot of the Soldiers Angels site shows the veterans of Iraq/Afganistan, but look close and you will see the folks helping out. Scroll down about a quarter of the way & you will see a partial description of Sgt Dolphini's effort. As of yesterday, the 14th, his leadership this summer had brought in over $13,000 in donations. Mostly in $10 & $20 bills given by folks passing by on the street. About a third of that was collected on the 24 hour vigil on the 4th July.

Shameful, for both the American government and Obama personally.

Yes a lot of disrespectfull actions have been made to towards veterans by various US government officials in the last 20 years. Or the last 230 years for that matter. It does not take much effort to direct venom in that direction.

Coversely the ordinary citizens, the veterans families, & even non US citizens I've met, who stepped up and carried the load counts for a great deal with me.

Sergeant Dolfini has continued his effort since last summer.

http://www.jconline.com/article/2010...t-for-comrades

What he originally thought last summer would result in maybe three hundred dollars for the Soldiers Angels organization has so far collected over $30,000 in cash & a unestimated quantity of health & comfort items for the wounded soldiers at the US military hospitals. The donations go to the Soldiers Angels organization which provides aid & care to recently maimed men & women beyond what the hospital staff have time or funds to provide.

http://soldiersangels.org/about-us.html

Sgt Dofini has organized the Tippecanoe County Marine Corps League for this solicitation effort. He has also traveled as far as Texas to help other veterans groups organize similar fund raising efforts.

The British Governments attitude towards their Ex service men disabled or not has never been much to boast about. If they have changed their ways recently I apologise (and am also amazed!!) lcm1

Not uncommon. Locally here at Lafayette there is a veterans 'home' operated by the state of Indiana. Established back in the late 19th Century for elderly impoverished Civl War veterans. Any number of state politicians would like to shut the place down & foist the residents off on the tender mercy of the Federal Veterans Administration and Medicare. But they dare only whisper about it lest the many veterans organizations organize a lynch mob.

Is it unfair to say "I'm glad we are not by ourselves"? Although I must say out of all fairness that the Dept: of Veteran Affairs in Australia and the general outlook on Veterans is excellent, even to us 'Poms'! When you come from a 'Deadbeat' Government attitude to a good one, you notice the differance!! lcm1

Wish I had time to study the Austrailian system. Are independent veterans organizations very strong in Australia or New Zealand? Are they able to influence the politicians much?

Yes they are quite strong, the sad part about it is we are mostly of past older wars and have an annoying habit of keep 'Falling off of the perch' and individual organisations are closing down from lack of members at quite an alarming rate. I can name three from the 2nd WW of recent times, The Dunkirk Vets, Arctic Convoys, Torbruk and Normandy with a No: of others I have not mentioned. Younger ex service men and women, understandably have jobs to do, Wives or Husbands young children etc: and do not concentrate on things quite so much as the oldies. As I understand it, it is the same in many other countries. lcm1

I see Veterans of Irag and Afganistan stepping up to the plate but fear they're looked upon as extremists and largely ignored by our administration.

Win the MoH and, with luck, a bridge or stretch of freeway somewhere will be named for you.

Pretty pitiful.

The smart ones are working their way into the political parties at the entry level. Building their connections and influence. The down side is many will be corrupted as is common with so many career politicians. Outsiders breaking in at the mid & upper levels are the ones who shake things up the best, or for the worst. But breaking in to the upper levels is a lot tougher. The established polticians will smear you as a extremist & fool no matter how reasonable your intent & agenda might be.

Yes, established politicians all seem to be 'tarred with the same brush' even the so called good ones, don't trust them to far! lcm1.

Met with Sgt Dolphini, the treasurer, and other members this evening. Since the last public solicitation 7 November residual contributions have brought the total donation to a bit under $28,000 in cash & over $8,000 in new clothing, & other items for the Soldiers Angels organization. This ammount is vastly over what was expected from a few Sunday afternoons of solicitation on the street corner.
