Republicans hurt veterans.

Senate Republicans block measure to provide additional benefits to homeless veterans.

http://thinkprogress.org/2010/06/29/...less-veterans/

This is pretty low, even for Republicans,” the Washington Monthly’s Steve Benen said. While Murray pledged to continue to fight for the bill’s passage, Majority Leader Harry Reid’s (D-NV) spokesperson said “Republicans have their priorities backwards — according to them, it’s OK to give tax breaks to CEOs who send American jobs overseas, but not to help out-of-work Americans and homeless veteran.”

Wackjobbery at it's finest.

McCONNELL: Madam president, reserving the right to object and I will have to object on behalf of my colleague Sen. Coburn from Oklahoma. He has concerns about this legislation, particularly as he indicates in a letter that I’ll ask the Senate to appear on the record that it be paid for up front so that the promises that makes the Veterans are in fact kept. So madam president I object.
I agree...why pass some bogus legislation that can't be funded just as a political ploy by Democrats. Get the funding FIRST, THEN pass it and ensure that it actually happens, which is all the dissent is about.

Someone needs to actually READ the links they post instead of just passing them along IAW the DU/Daily Kos membership guidelines.

The Republicans didn't block anything. Sen. Murray wanted her bloated spending bill (with a heartstrings tugging title) to be approved by "unanimous consent"... No debate... No roll call vote... Just simply adopted into law without objection... And without anyone actually reading the bill.

Extra items in S. 1237: Homeless Veterans and Other Veterans Health Care Authorities Act of 2010...

Creates a new bureaucrat:
Title I, Section 107 - "Establishes a Special Assistant for Veterans Affairs"
Authorizes VA treatment for toxic exposure unrelated to military service:
Title II, Section 201 - "Authorizes, from the date of enactment of this Act through December 31, 2012, the provision of VA health care for any illness of a veteran who served in the Persian Gulf War and was exposed to a toxic substance, radiation, or other environmental hazard during such service, notwithstanding insufficient medical evidence that the illness is related to such service."
Creates 8 more bureauecrats:
Title III, Section 301 - "Increases the authorized number of VA: (1) Assistant Secretaries from seven to eight; and (2) Deputy Assistant Secretaries from 19 to 27. Abolishes the VA position of Director of Construction and Facilities Management."
Creates another bureaucrat:
Title III, Section 302 - "Establishes within the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) the position of Director of Physician Assistant Services..."
Creates more work for bureaucrats:
Title III, Section 303 - "Directs the Secretary to establish and implement the Medical Center Quality Report Card Initiative to publish, at least twice each year, information on the quality and performance of each VA medical center."
And it fails to clearly say how these things will be paid for:
Title IV, Section 401 - "Requires funding for amounts necessary to carry out this Act to be derived from certain unobligated amounts appropriated for VA medical services, but makes such amounts unavailable if their availability would otherwise limit or impede the delivery of health care services to veterans."
Last I checked, one of the duties of US Senators was to actually read the bills they are asked to approve. I also seem to recall the Democrats making a big production of their resumption of "Pay-Go" rules that actually require new spending bills to be clearly paid for with revenue sources or offsetting spending cuts.

It's amazing how much extraneous CRAP is thrown into that legislation....eight more "secretary" positions are supposed to help homeless vets?!

The problem here is that Crashy has no clue about what's going on here. We hve a HUGE VA hospital about four miles from here, and they are constantly reaching-out to the homeless, have an in-patient addiction program, all kinds of things designed to do what this Senator seems to think is needed...I submit that we just need to work the programs already in place.

Here's another kicker...you CAN'T force people INTO the programs! According to a friend of mine who actually works with homeless vets, many don't WANT the help, or just disappear without saying anything, stopping benefits and making it next to impossible to find these guys and gals and get them the help they have earned!

This is merely political posturing by desperate Dems who know their collective asses are on the line come the next election.

McConnell is merely doing his job, and that drives libs absolutely crazy...

Of course Republicans want to kick veterans while they are down, and push old ladies into traffic, and tax the poor. And Democrats want everyone to have Golden toilets. I also heard from this one blogger that Republicans will eat our children if you don't keep an eye on them. I think that part at least is true!

I know you wear a helmet, but it is just 1 more secretary. Anything you can do to try and bash people smarter than you, eh? Sad.

Wow. Since your 1 hospital works fine (or you think it works fine) no fine tuning is needed? All the VA hospitals are working great? New treatments evolve all the time. Patients come and go. New methods of therapy rise up. I submit that your idea (which is essentially.... do nothing) is useless.

You know what is going on in all the hospitals AND with all the veterans?! There are plenty of veterans who are more than happy to accept help for the issues they developed while in service to our country. Not that you would know what that was like. Why even bring up that some don't want help, this is clearly not applicable to them. My god. Cpancreas should be consulted before every thread!

The link goes to a site named "Think Progress"... as in "think Progressive" which is the new millenia term for commie.

And if you want to talk about a party kicking vets around, the "progressive Dems" have not allowed veterans and soldiers dependents to remain on their healthcare to 26 like the rest of the country, have reduced the active and VA formulary incredibly, and thanks to the healthcare package vets are even paying taxes on their prosthetics. Harkens back to the broken promises of the clinton era, doesn't it?

Don't even posture for a minute that the democratic party or its pro-commie-gressive members give a rats feces factory about soldiers or vets. Been there, lived it, and had to buy my own T-Shirt which a democrat promptly tried to take away. Republicans have taken care of the military and vets infinitely better than the fuzzy rabbit hugging bongo beating hippie commies that now for the bulk of the congress and executive branch (well, at least until November when we give Congress it's enema).

30 states. Not all. research first next time.
And...

The U.S. House of Representatives approved a Senate health overhaul bill and sent it tothe president for his signature on March 21. The President signed the bill into law on March 23. The House also passed a package of amendments that will change provisions of the original bill. That was sent to the Senate for action on March 22, 2010 and was passed into law. This reform would requires health plans to allow young people up to their 26th birthday to remain on their parents’ insurance policy, at the parents’ choice regardless of marital status and would be effective 6 months after enactment--October, 2010. The legislation was the subject of a fierce partisan battle and passed with only Democratic votes.

Republicans have vowed to continue their opposition.

So you hold up a standard (dependents on parents' insurance till 26) then blame the Dems for not meeting the standard? Once again.... research, think, post.... in that order.

Quote:

Now you drive right over a cliff.
The only point you are making is that you hate the democrats. So much even, that it has clouded your judgement so much to make you ignorant of reality.
Really, the sad part of your post and mentality is not that you think Dems are evil. There is plenty of blame for the left, for sure. The sad part is that you think the republicans are innocent of the same nonsense you blindly accuse the Dems of.

I won't quote the entire bucket of drivel you posted. BUT, so only 30 states allow kids to remain. That doesn't apply to Tricare for AD and retirees in the least. http://www.tricare.mil/NHCB_QnA.aspx At 21 they are off unless they are still a full time student (then to 23) or disabled, and the burden of proof is substantial (I couldn't get my Autistic sons coverage extended despite 20 years of medical documentation).

And during the debates in the Senate Democrats defeated an amendment by Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) to the reconciliation bill that would have exempted children and the disabled from the new tax on medical assistive devices. A mostly party-line vote with all but one Democrat voting against the Inhofe amendment killed the effort by a 57-41 vote. Their response? paraphrased - "It exempts a certain group from sharing the burden." That group includes veterans whom have lost limbs serving their country once they have left the military.

And the last time I checked more government control (aka socialism) was what the current crop of progressives were looking for. If you are so convinced that present day (post Stevenson) dems are ultra pro military then please illuminate the conversation with examples. I'll be glad to point out multiple instances for each you give in which a Republican administration contributed to the welfare and betterment of the military.

Only Progressives, Leftists and, the oblivious would buy that there are lots of homeless veterans. As a whole veterans are better educated, better equipped for employment and, healtier than the general population.
They have far, far less mental illness and drug abuse problems too.

Reports that claim high numbers of homeless vets almost always rely on self-reporting by the homeless themselves without the report issuers checking the veracity of those claiming this status. That is, most homeless claiming to be vets are lying about it.

You must be new to Politics.
Of course, every secretary will require a staff of hundreds, all of whom will want to micro-manage every operation they can, and add all they can to their own personal expense accounts.

And the V.A. is held up as a model for ObamaCare.

once again, your words. ridiculous, partisan words with no basis in fact.

Do you have a link to support this? Because I am sure there is more to this than "an assault by democrats on disabled individuals" as you would like to paint it. And we know you like to paint with the sweeping generalization brush.

Off the cliff you go again. Why would I provide examples when I made no such claim? Scroll up and read my post again. I am just refuting your claim that "Democrats could give a rats ass about soldiers or veterans" because it is simply not true.
