Thanks for thinking about me HB, I actually have G.W Nichols book A soldier's story of his regiment. Its a reprint version when I received it a few years ago I was very excited. He does not talk about my ancester but his name is in the book at the end in a list of officers and it does say that he died at home which I already knew but still pretty cool. When I visit battlefields that the 61st fought on it is one of the books that I take as I like to go to the areas that my GG-Grandfather was at and try to imagine what he went through and what is was like for all involved. He was badley wounded on May 12th 1864 at the bloody angle I have always wondered if he was close enough to see Lee when he was going to lead a charge. His daughter's middle name was Lee. I'm thinking that I know were he came up with that name his daughter was my ggrandmother.

I love this kind of thread. Going back and reading regimental histories written by members of the regiment, while sometimes framed to make the regiment look as good as possible, even in defeat, are fascinating reads. As a part of my Siege of Petersburg web site project, I've been compiling long lists of regimental histories available for units which participated in the Siege of Petersburg. There is NO WAY I could list all of these without hijacking this thread, so I've included my up to date lists in Excel format, along with some links to Google Books and Archive.org, for those who might be interested in hundreds of regimental histories.

EDIT: I just realized both files are way too large to be added as attachments, so here are the direct links:

I would be very appreciative if you post anything you come across involving either the 17th Wisconsin Infantry or 4th Wisconsin Independent Artillery Battery (aka 4th Light Artillery), especially in regards to the Vicksburg campaign.
