I appreciate the links to these books very much. I have a very long reading list lol. Is there a portable device where these could be transferred to so in order not to have to read them on the computer?

Also, and I'm not sure this is the thread to place this, but I was wondering if anyone knew of a book specifically about Gen. Grant's aide Gen. John Rawlins? Thank you.

We were in a bookstore just the other day, and my son picked up the J.L. Chamberlain book "The Passing of the Armies". I told him that instead of buying it, we could probably download it. Sure enough...

Hour-by-hour accounts of key battles, a number of passable maps, doesn't skip on the naval warfare, pictures and portraits. (And I believe the author knows his stuff.)

At least I can read the original pdfs on a mobile device after processing them in Acrobat (Document->Optimize Scanned Document). But Acrobat is of course commercial.
