Post Remains of Vietnam War soldier repatriated

Quote:
HANOI (AFP) - Remains believed to be of an American special forces soldier listed as missing during the Vietnam War have been repatriated after a fellow serviceman helped locate the body, a United States official said on Thursday.

After a ceremony on Wednesday in the central city of Danang, the remains, along with others from a separate incident, were flown to Hawaii for further identification, said Ron Ward of the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC).

Post Missing Vietnam War Airman Identified

Quote:
The U.S. Department of Defense's Defense Prisoner of War/Missing Persons agency issued the following news release:

The Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office announced today that the remains of a U.S. serviceman, missing in action from the Vietnam War, have been identified and will be returned to his family for burial with full military honors.

Air Force Col. Gilbert S. Palmer Jr., 37, of Upper Darby, Pa., will be buried Nov. 1, in Arlington National Cemetery near Washington, D.C. On Feb. 27, 1968, Palmer and one other crew member were carrying out photo-reconnaissance of enemy targets in Quang Binh, North Vietnam, in their RF-4C aircraft. After losing radio communication, Palmer's plane crashed in an unknown location and could not be located during search efforts at the time.

Some Did Not Return - SP5 Richard J. (Rick) Hentz, Linguist

Ceremony in Oshkosh, WI, June 2011, during the Southeast Asia Army Security Agency Veterans reunion. The ceremony was in honor of one of 138th Aviation Co (RR) members, Rick Hentz, who was KIA over North Vietnam while on a JU-21A Left Jab mission, on March 4, 1971. Rick was one of five 138th members killed on that day’s mission. Rick’s nephew is on the left and Rick’s uncle is on the right.

The last ASA aircraft lost to hostile fire was a U.S. Army JU-21A LEFT JAB
assigned to the 138th Radio Research Company based at Phu Bai, near the DMZ.
On 4 March 1971 it took off on an intelligence-gathering mission. The
aircraft headed northwest towards the DMZ between North and South Vietnam.
Reportedly, the aircraft's mission was to collect intelligence regarding
surface-to-air missile sites, either in the DMZ or just north of it. Shortly
after departure, the JU-21A, tail #67-18062, was shot down.
The crew was declared missing in action. A search effort to locate the
aircraft along its known flight path produced no findings. Those lost were:

CPT Michael W. Marker from Wichita Falls, Texas KIA/BNR WO1
Harold L. Algaard from Fosston, Minnesota KIA/BNR
SP6 John T. Strawn from Salem, Oregon KIA/BNR
SP5 Richard J. Hentz from Oshkosh, Wisconsin KIA/BNR
SP5 Rodney D. Osborne from Kent, Washington KIA/BNR

Mary Ann Claims One More

The following is from the Americal Division Veterans Association Facebook page, concerning the loss of a veteran returning to Vietnam . . .

Quote:
Dear friends,

It is with great sadness that I must report that a member of our group has died in Vietnam. Jim Craig fell from a steep embankment on Mary Ann and was fatally injured. We did not see this happen and it took an extensive search to locate and recover his body.
...
I have been in contact via e-mail with his wife Donna. She believes Jim will be returned home on Saturday and a funeral scheduled for Wednesday. I am making all efforts to attend the funeral.

Jim was a member of this board for a long time and I am sure he will be missed by everyone. The trip was outstanding and we were having a great time. This unfortunate accident has us all baffled and we will most likely never have the answers we want.

Please keep Jim and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

Our group returns to Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon local time.

Gary

Jim Craig
Longmont, Colorado
1945-2012

My fellow 1/46th vet Bob Short was along on this tour. They were at the site of LZ Mary Ann near Hau Duc (now Tra My). Mary Ann had at one side a steep cliff. Apparently Jim fell. But no one saw it happen. He was missed and the body not found until later.

He is featured on the cover of the latest edition of the Americal Division Veterans Association Journal, with the single word caption "Brother". There is a nice tribute article by his wife, a brave and gracious lady.
