Magazine article about US aid in Haiti

Here's a news article from a Russian e-zine which might be interesting for the folks in the forum. I've edited the first paragraph and you can read the rest at this address:

http://translate.google.ru/translate...2F&sl=ru&tl=en

Take note that while Google translation generally does conveys the gist of the text, it goofs quite often as well. Like "French loudscpeaker broadcasts" is actually "US Marines' loudspeaker blares in French".

The first line is, well, original.

Quote:
Haiti of Discord

Dmitry Vinogradov

"I have **** all the US marines (through their ass) that invade Haiti", - some Gerard Chaumont scribbled on the wall of a UN base toilet in Port-au-Prince. This is the general view of the majority of educated people from different governmental and public organizations based in the UN camp. They believe that the Americans invaded Haiti only to prevent the delivery of humanitarian supplies, while pursuing their own geopolitical objectives - and couldn't care less of the Haitians' fate. The island's common residents are rather of the opposite opinion - if there's anyone who can bring relative order here, it's only the U.S. In any case, the looters' ravages have already been stopped: this is what RR (Russian Repoter) journalist saw in Port-au-Prince with his own eyes.

I have seen a few clips of "disturbances" in Haiti, UN blue helmets always seem to be on a receiving end... seems those boys are still trying to figure out how to get organized.

Once you get past the first sentence, it looks like a prety reasonable report, as far as it goes, I just have to wonder why it began with the scrawl from a toilet... playing to the base?

While the whole text is in Russian the first sentence is in English. Here the foreign language acts as a medium to convey the attitudes of said educated majority and their level of criticism of US personnel in a concise and "punchy" way. And it's not immediately perceived as an obscenity by the Russian reader. The whole linguistic trick is lost in translation, of course.

The Haitians remember all the way back to Chesty Puller and his Marines. That is why they disrespect the UN Blue Helmets.

The blue helmets are universally disrespected. No one thinks they're worth a darn. Not to mention that they have always dithered between excessive force and complacency when dealing with refugees and thugs alike.....

So the UN "blue helmets" are now some kind of generic entity?

It all depends on what mandate and what forces. These are mostly Brazilians, not exactly "UN". But everyone agrees that so far these scarper at the first sign of trouble.

But I'm sure US forces with a UN mandate automatically become equally useless from becoming "blue helmets".

Look at the damn mandate for the UN forces.

I don't recall US forces working under UN control wearing blue helmets.

Secondly, everytime the US works under a UN mandate, the US forces tend to be handicapped until they're helpless. It's not that they're running at the first sight of trouble, it's that they're not allowed to be proactive, or to protect themselves, so running is the only option.

It certainly worked on me... I saw no point in reading beyond the first sentence.

And... If that first sentence is truly reflective of international sentiment... The the rest of the world can just handle these sorts of things from now on. I'm not an isolationist... I'm almost Wilsonian in my view of foreign policy. But I am fed up with the US being spat on every time we bend over backwards to mitigate the effects of natural and man-made disasters.

I'm not sure about that. I've always regarded them as some sort of politically correct, first world funded third world police force at first world rates, commanded by an incredibly incompetent bloated bureaucracy.

The troops with all the training and disciplinary problems that go with third world armies, and hardly likely to make lifelong friends with the locals.

But I'm just a simple sod with simple opinions and could be completely wrong. For all I know they could be paragons of virtue and models we should all live our lives by.

Putting them into a basket case like Haiti- even before the earthquake- strikes me as something I would do- the height of insanity. The US Military seems the way to go- blue helmets seems to me a waste of valuable resource piling ditherers and incompetents into a volatile place.

I think that it is a good indicator of reality on the ground. Haiti is indeed a place where the priveleged few are educated and having been well inculcated with anti Western moral relativism and oligarchical self interest, of course the "intellectual" kleptocracy of the elites, who have been so instrumental in maintainng the poverty of Haiti, hate the US Marines and all they represent.

It is just as telling that the common Haitian knows that any aid going to their government will never reach them and it is necessary for the foreigners, most of whom are currently Americans, to do it if is going to be done.

I think that the intervening years of Papa Doc, Baby Doc and Father Aristide have probably softened the Haitian line of how only the foreign devils have screwed them over.

I think their best chance is a Puerto Rico type deal.

Though whether the Haitians or US will buy it is anyone's deal. Or the Dominican Republic, again anyone's deal, and not much love lost there either.

It's long since time Puerto Rico decide: In or out of the US as a state. Their current halfway status is absurd.

I can think of no reason whatsoever we should consider absorbing Haiti. Let it become a UN protectorate or something equally useless.
