Singapore probably doesn't produce any crops worth speaking of. My point was they are not poor despite having marginal agricultural land. Haiti's problem is not its agricultural climate, but its sociopolitical one.

loseing our humanity
where is our advanced and evolving society hiding now this is what seperates the peoples of the world from your nieghbour. Not in my backyard I dont care lettum burn but if your neighbour's house is on fire you'd help him put it out yes why? caus he is your neighbour no because it my spread to your house. we helped the bulkans we helped indoniesia In 1939 a big fire started and many turned their backs in denile not my problem. Complacency will serve no interest we get them back on their feet get food production and safe water flowin and medical back up and let them rebuild we give them a hand up not a hand out if they like being poor let it be .I do not think we should rebuild that country private intereset and business will do that, or not.

Hatian corruption and dictatorship predated the Clinton administration by decades or centuries. (Hard to believe I posted this, isn't it) OTOH, the fear of being called imperialists by other dictators has been the main reason that there wasn't a more agressive attempt to change Haiti.

What makes us think we could "change" Haiti? Into what?
"Democratization" is just a Bush-ism. It doesn't even work in America, let alone a former French slave colony.

Agreed.
To the consternation of the enlightened purveyors of equal outcomes for everyone in the world, the only way to change Haiti for the better is to make it profitable for investors to exist there. Evil corporations make billion and the Haitians make a few thousand more. Everyone comes out ahead and resenting the most means nobody gains.
Law and order trumps all.

Neither does anyone else...which was the point.
Maybe we can send the Gitmo inmates there, and hire the Haitians to chase them continuously around the island with machetes.

You wouldn't have to hire them. Give them machetes, and MREs and they'd probably do it for free.
