Seems like some bean counters are still working. The president survived. Were is he in his country's time of need? Yes, I know it was/is and well continue to be a basket case.

I've been largely avoiding this news event, but in talking with friends, you hear other secondary items connected.

It's clear a lot of non Haitians died in the quake. There were of course a lot of people working in the region. The RCMP mission there lost some people.

And the numbers sure have gotten high for the total death count.

Anything good that might have been in existence there sure won't do well thanks to this event.

No doubt about it. The Dominican Republic is on the same island as Haiti and we're not hearing anything about the disaster there. Look at a satellite photo of the island prior to the quake and you'll see the difference. Haiti is a brown wasteland like something out of World War One's no-man's-land, the Dominican Republic is a lush paradise.

The crux of the problem.

Edit: Seems presidents in that country always do well...Baby Doc is still living in the South of France AFAIK. Wonder if he will donate some millions to help.

East of the mountains west of the mountains. The easterly winds dump more rain in the east. Then there seems to be a non PC fact that they won't get off thier lazy a$$ to work or help themselves.

It's not quite that simple; the line literally starts at the border. I've also seen ground-level photos of the border between the Dominican Republic and Haiti, there was no discernable terrain variation in many of them except Haiti was utterly treeless. Haiti may have a geophysical disadvantage compared to the eastern portion of Hispaniola, but its real disadvantage has been the perpetual government corruption and dictatorships (as if those are really ever separate) it has suffered since Haiti split from France. Tropical rain forests are poor terrain for agriculture, but that's not why Haiti is poor. Singapore is on a tropical island too.

Populated by Chinese and Malasians and previusly developed by British. Dominican Rebublic while not real paradise is average latin American country while Haiti is African country which avoided the "horrors" of XIX century colonialism. The fact that Haiti don't have real police and army is consequence of US pro Aristide intervention in nighties; it managed to demolish the Haitan state all right but not to bring democracy. It's like Hamastan but this blunder you can't blame on Neocons or Bush.

Essentially the Haitian government has ceded sovereignty of the country to the United States. They are incapable of dealing with this crisis so handing us the keys is the easiest way out.

Micheal J Fox is a great guy compared to that @$^* Bruce Springsteen .
He refused to perform at NEW Jersey Governor Christie's inaugural because Christie is a Republican. Not very bipartisan for New Jersey's favorite son.

You won't hear much about relieve in the Dominican Republic, because of the simple fact it didn't get hit that hard.

About the government reaction. I guess they're doing a New Orleans After a Katrina.

I was surprised to learn how little that George Clooney-show brought in, America is normally such a generous country, but with this attitude...

Finally, I found this to be an interesting column:
