A Few Observations On Haiti

Just a few personal o0bservatrionbs`made`after watching the footage on Haiti:

1. No police or military seen.

2. No Haitian officials, including no Haitian ambassador standing next to the President.

3. No organized Haitian emergency response despite the fact the majority of the island was untouched.

4. No Haitian trucks or heavy equipment.

5. not a single member of the government, or any official of any nature saying anything to anybody.

6. The President and the usual plants and vegetables on the podium for his relief effort speech, but no Haitian ambassador.

Passingly strange.

They live on foreign aid. Well, the powers that be do in that place, why would they ever wantto do anything for themselves?

Now they get to have the country re-built just for being needy, what percentage is there for them to stop being needy?

Well a lot of the government was killed in the earthquake...but it was not really a government before anyway.

I heard on the radio this morning that the three principal UN deputies who had been managing the aid effort on site in Haiti were all killed in the quake. Apparently they were all at work when their building came down.

MM - Not sure how you missed the Haitian ambassador. I've seen him on Bloomberg, CNN, and ABC. He may just not have gotten to MSNBC yet.

The UN will need to take emergency management more seriously. Had techniques like those in an article you posted been used, the UN mission Haiti could have avoided decapitation.

To be fair, I don't think Haiti has the response structure even remotely capable of dealing with an occurrence, such as this. Do they even have heavy trucks?

I don't know. Never been there.

They have to have at least some. Do they have anything approaching the truck fleet of Overnite, UPS, or FedEx? Heck no. UPS or FedEx alone could probably take care of the logistics for Haiti indefinitely, and without a significant drain on their materials handling resources.

They have trucks that can haul in water at outrageous gouge prices. Seems like those trucks could help haul supplies just as well.

I've been watching as many news channels as I could in between trips to the hospital. musty have missed him. I guess he was maintaining a "low profile" while hoping no one would ask him any awkward questions.

The Haitian Army, Navy, and Air Force were disbanded in 1995 and the 11,000 member Haitian National Police can only account for about 4,000 officers at the present moment. Apparently much of their senior leadership was lost when the Ministry of Justice building collapsed along with the Police HQ.

Given the reputation of their police force, I can't even begin to imagine how their fire/rescue and emergency response systems operate. In fact, I have not even heard a single mention of Haitian fire trucks, non hospital operated ambulances, urban rescue teams, EMTs/paramedics, firefighters, and the like.

See above. I don't think these things existed in the first place. Caribbean islands are not exactly known for having well organized law enforcement and fire/rescue agencies. In fact, fire/rescue is often a function of the police force in alot of Caribbean nations ... yes you read that right, the cops also serve as firefighters.

Im still trying to figure out where their president ran off too. In fact, I don't think he has a said a single world since the immediate aftermath last week.

The Haitians managed to organize a fleet of decent looking water trucks to haul in water to be sold at outrageous prices to the victims. Seems to me that they could be doing something to save themselves with those same trucks.

I wonder where the former members of government are hiding, and which Swiss accounts they are using to pay for it.

I also remember that just a few short weeks ago former president Clinton was down there pimping for a resort, airport and highway. Kind of hard to imagine that kind of investment on an island "without any infrastructure..."

Of course, the real question that everyone avoids asking is "How did Haiti get like this in the first place"?

While I feel genuinely sorry for the Haitian people as a whole, I'm not blind to reality.

The only good thing about Haiti is that it's separated from America by an ocean so Haitians can't just jump into the water and ford it like Mexicans across the Rio Grande. Our Coast Guard can do a decent job blockading/isolating the population there. Words cannot describe the extent of the disaster in America if those people where connected to us by a land mass.

We can't keep the Dominicans from getting to Puerto Rico and we also can't keep the Cubans from getting to Florida so I don't think we can stop the Haitians. We might as well modify the wet foot, dry foot policy for them as well.

Obama is already doing so. He is drooling at the concept of three million more voters who might actually like him in 2012.
