Should Obama Be Offering Cash Aid to Haiti?

This is going to sound harsh, so let me start by saying I think we should give Haiti all the practical help we can. But Obi's million dollar pledge doesn't strike me as a good idea.

Typically foreign aid is sent from one government office to another. Whether the money is sent directly to the Haitian government or through some UN office, we can expect corruption and bribery to be thinning the dollar amount that actually gets there. "All out" relief efforts sound noble, but lets not forget who we're dealing with: one of the most corrupt governments in the Carribbean. Those guys couldn't run their country when it was in the best of circumstances, I highly doubt they will manage well in the worst.

Let's stick with more physical forms of aid. Military security efforts, doctors, building materials. When it comes to money, I prefer to keep it in the realm of the private charities. Great efficiency, less waste. My preferred charities were spinning up to help Haiti before the first aftershocks were reported. But no money should be given to the UN or the government itself. You might as well set fire to the money if you do. The charities will see to it financial aid gets to where it is really needed. Government offices will just waste it.

I completely agree. You can't just start throwing money around. And it's not just the Haitian government that is corrupt,a great many of the aid organizations are as well. And we don't need to talk about the UN.The aid we provide to the Haitian people must go to them directly. As we are bending over to help these people,we musn't allow ourselves to be "violated" from behind.

Not really an option at the moment. Both the government and the existing UN mission have been virtually decapitated. For the moment it looks like relief will be largely military or not at all.

American cash foreign aid doesn't leave America. Take for example US foreign aid to Colombia so they can fight the jungle counter insurgency against FARC and the Narco-terrorists. The Colombian military received the money and decided the best deal for what they needed was cheap Brazilian cargo transports from Embraer. The US government was like bull-, you need to upgrade your fleet of old Lockheed-Martin C-130s!!

Or US Aid to Israel in the 1980s when the Israelies designed the Levi that could compete well with the F-16 and meet the specific needs of the IAF better than the F-16. US says bull-! you need F-16s and to stop all work on the Levi if you want any money from us.

Sorry. You can't give money to either the UN or the Haitian "government".None of it will get to where it needs to go.Our aid should be materials, food, water, medical assistance and security.Anything the UN or Haitians need cash for we take care of ourselves,or not at all.

Y'all rememeber when the Pirates siezed the crew of the American flagged ship in the Indian ocean that was working on delivering US Aid to Africa?
My first response was "I didn't think any companies had any American flagged cargo ships; that everybody was using something like Korean-built ships, registered in Panama, under a Cayman Islands corporation, staffed by a Nigerian crew. But wait that's free-market, and this was a US Aid ship and when it comes to US Aid, we don't care about efficiency or international competition. We are all about mercantalist isolationism when it comes to spending money on foreign aid. God forbid one dollar of it actually be spent outside this country!

I'm telling you, all that cash foreign aid from the US Gov will come with strings requiring it to be spent on US supplied bottled water, and spent on food supplies from the US Corn-belt, Wheat-belt, and US agribusiness.

Never said he was giving it to Haitian government. Will likely be routed to USAID to mission specific NGO programs.

My family and a church group had been freinds with a local missionary who went to Haiti, married a local and both of them are part of a local orphan boy's school. The happened to be in Washington when the quake occured and are coming back to town today. The will return to Haiti this weekend to participate in rebuilding. We are at least able to put the money directly into the hands of someone we know know and trust. very unusual.

Sending them suitcases of cash is just asking for trouble. If we are going to supply resources to Haiti or any other nation, it should be tangible goods that have a low likelihood to be stolen, pilfered, re-sold, or destroyed. I'd start by spending money on our military to send in water, medical teams, etc. and set up distribution points guarded by US Marines.

Then I would send round the clock airdrops of MRE's over the hardest hit areas and totally saturate the place with them. I would also clean out WalMart of every tent they have from coast to coast and drop those in.

After that who knows. But at least in the immediate aftermath I would know that each dollar in is resulting in a tangible benefit. You send in so many tents that they essentially become worthless/free to everyone who wants one. Cut down on the warlord mentality.

Instead, we are probably going to see billions spent on computers for the UN office there.

Things are getting worse quickly.Seems they are beginning to bite the hands that will feed them.Next they will turn on each other.Since the Haitians think we are doing such a poor job,we need to remind them that first of all,a relief effort like this takes time to really get moving, and secondly we can take all our toys, and all our aid and just go home. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,583084,00.html

This will end up requiring a much larger military commitment.

Nothing a division of Marines can't take care of. Our 'Aid' to Haiti needs to be in the form of providing security, food, and water. We absolutely do not need to throw money at this problem. Money will do nothing but encourage corruption at all levels, and recreate the Haiti that existed before.

The quake has given Haiti a once in a lifetime chance to not only rebuild, but totally recreate their nation. We need to help them take advantage of this opportunity.

I'm thinking a battalion of Seabees and a Regiment of Marines, along with an LHD's worth of Helos and rolling stock would be sufficient to help rebuild and provide security in the nation.
