Georgia's tank losses

A year after the war booth sides published only official live losses numbers. No much have been ever said about equipment losses (especially armor), however it was confirmed lately, that Russians lost not 4 but 6 planes (half of them destroyed by friendly fire).

This topic is about Georgia's tank losses.

Georgian's tank suffered heavy casaulties in Cchinwali. Col. Kazbek Frijew, CO of North Ossetia's Peace Forces counted 12 Georgia's destroyed tanks. Russians claim that they blew away 10 tanks in that location plus two more captured. So numbers above are probably correct.

Another hard time for Georgia's armor was at 14:00 8 August , when Su-25 badly bombed 4th Infantry Brigade and Independet Tank Regiment. No information about destroyed equipment is avaliable, but there were 22 KIA after that air raid, so probably some tank were hit as well.

Another three tank were put out of commision at 15:50 8 August on the road near Dzari by Ossetian's insurgents. All sources're confirming that.

More over:

Russians are claming that on T-72 was disabled on 8 August, by Moscowc's T-72s from 1. Company 141. Independent Tank Battalion near Cchinwali.

Russians are saying that tduring war they captured 65 (69) enemy tanks and 20 of them were later destroyed (damaged or old ones). Among captured armor there was significant number of T-72 SIM-1, left by crews just like new.

In the end we can say, that Georgians lost about 80-90 tanks.

You started out well, but

In the end we can say, that Georgians lost about 80-90 tanks.

Seems like a sudden leap upwards. Was there enough fighting to even justify that much iron changing hands?

Well simply the Georgians did a tactical retreat "a la Whermacht 1944" and forgot about them and some other things.

Sounds like it. Russians captured not only able tanks but also many other mechanized equipment.

IIRC the "burning tanks in the centre of Chinkvlai" aren't actually georgian but russian, also, i was under the impression that they managed to get one of their tank battalions out?

Now The Majorityof the Georgian T-72 was upgraded yo T-72-SIM-1, I think perhaps 40 wasn´t.

A Georgian T-72-SIM-1 should look something like this.

A Russian T-72BM should look something like this.

I can see, at least on Przemyslaw one destroyed T-72BM.

Depending on the source Russia lost 2-3 tanks, at least 2 of them T-72 of some variant.

Well, talking about pictures above I wasn't so sure if all of that were Georgian's armor, so subtitled in "outskirts of Cchinwali" insted of "Georgian's tanks on fire". However the first 5 photos show the same two Georigan's tanks. Another photos of them:

These two below are also Georgians:

Just had a flashback to Iraq, especially from that shot of the one with the turret flipped over in place.

Yes, I think those are the "two georgian tanks" i was talking about. My sources say that those are actually not georgian, but russian tanks.

I might be mistaken, talking off the top of my head here, but I'm about 90% sure. IIRC they belonged to the peacekeepers there.

My sources? A presentation by our J2.

Well, I should think it's:

4) three T-72 ( No. ??, ?? and probably 406), destroyed on the crossroads in Chinwali between 13:00 and 14:00 8th August by Ossetian's insurgents under command of gen. Brankiewicz. Tank No. 406 was hit by RPG-7 in the rear of it's turrent, that was blewn away for dozens meters.

Do You have a linkt that proves it otherwise?

I know about those, but there are clearly just two tanks on those photos.
