MACV Team 22 - 1SGT Louis Janca

I served with the 4th Infantry in the Central Highlands during 1969-70. Over the years, I have written stories about courageous women who served as civilians in Vietnam, most notably the Donut Dollies. I am currently engaged in writing the story of Gloria Redlin. Gloria worked as a nurse for Lutheran World Relief. The truth, as I know it, is that Gloria Anne Redlin and 1st Sergeant Louis Emil Janca were returning by moped to Dr. Pat Smith's hospital in Kontum City late at night on October 13, 1970. On the way, they tried to run an ARVN roadblock, not knowing if it was friendly. Sergeant Janca was killed and Gloria Redlin was seriously wounded. She died of her wounds on October 21st.

I recently received an e-mail from the son of a comrade of Janca. He indicated that his father would end his stories about Louis Janca with, "well somebody finally collected the bounty". His father used to have an old VC flyer with his name on it. The flyer offered a bounty, payable upon his death, of $20,000 in gold. His father believed that Louis Janca's name was on a flyer as well.

So what began as a quest to tell the story of a forgotten female veteran has ballooned into an odyssey to find the truth about the death of Louis and Gloria. I am presently working a PSYOPS angle, whereby Janca's death was in fact some form of retribution. I would appreciate whatever information you can provide.

Hello,
Sorry, have nothing to contribute. Left Kontum in August 1964.

Macv team 22 bagi airfield 1967-68

I was the Assistant G-4, Ordnance Advisor, & Motor Officer.. Sept. 67-68 for 22nd ARVn Division...Knew CWO Parent and most of the officers and men at that time.
I wrote poetry for the Hai Moui Highlighter the local camp paper and got tagged with the moniker Bard of Bagi by our fearless leader LTC Fitzpatrick or Colonel Tibbetts...can't remember which...Have copies of the highlighters if anyone would like to see them...Look forward to hearing from others that served during that time...If anyone knows the whereabouts of Sgt. Loi ARVN motor pool chief, I would really like to know what happened to him after our "withdrawal"...
Thanks,
Bob Evans

Hello and Welcome to the Thread.
Trust there are others out there who'll chime in and offer up commentary and memories of days long past.

I've been tutoring an online course about Vietnam at SUNY/Empire State College for several years now. But, enrollment is dropping off; only have three students doing the readings, papers and discussions at this time as independent study for credit. I think the dropping enrollment reflects a diminished interest (Iraq and Afghanistan take priority), and also disinterest in "enrichment" courses (this one is "history") as opposed to "professional" or "business" (moneymaking) academic work.

Join the group, and surf the Site. There's something for every interest.

I was assigned to 40 RCAT and TM 22 from May 72 until we turned out the lights in Feb 73. By then we had been "consolidated" at Phu Cat.

Ngo Quang Truong, Le Minh Dao, Nguyen Khoa Nam ... they are some great generals of ARVN , but were not able to save their country from falling down.

ARVN Generals

Hello,
Thanks for that comment. The Regimental Commander of the 42nd Infantry, though only a colonel at the time I knew of him in 1964 (and I regret I do not recall his real name) - was nicknamed the Tiger of Tan Canh for his aggressiveness and ability. I do not know if he made brigadier general or even survived the era of the 1960's. I vaguely recall something that he might have been killed in one of the NVA attacks on the place.

I was assigned to Kontum and Advisory Team 22 in November of 1964. Sgt. Maj. as I recall was Szonka. The Dr. assigned was Capt. Bernard Covey. I moved down to Qui Nhon and almost immediately went with a group to Phu Cat. I was there the day that Mac the FAC plane crashed on takeoff. A terrible loss.

Hello,
I had left the Team in August 1964 at the end of my first one year long tour. Originally, this team had been part of Military Assistance Advisory Group - Vietnam, and it had been incorporated into Military Assistance Command, Vietnam in the spring.
Welcome to the thread, the site. And above all Enjoy.

There were a number of USMA grads among the officers. Lt's Saran, a mustang Lt. Colonel, a full colonel by the name of Mitchell. Lt. Ken Dean was killed on a patrol several weeks after I arrived. I am in touch with one of the radio operators from Team 22, Frank Wagner. I will keep a watch on this site. Regards

MACV Advisory Team 22, 1967-68

Mr. Parent,

My name is Robert Griffon. I worked in supply while with the team in BaGi and ran the movie projector each evening except Sunday and Thursday.
I have been back to BaGi twice; 1998 and 2009. I have lots of photos of QuiNhon and BaGi and aerial photos of QuiNhon. I would like to hear from you to see if you can recall other members of the team. I have been in touch with several.
Telephone cell: 417-766-8381
I hope to hear from you.

Sincerely,
SP/5 Robert Griffon
