5th ID and 1st Armor.

Did my basic at Ft. Sill, Ok for 13b. Gun-bunny! June 1981 to September 1981.

Assigned to Ft. Polk, La. Was in Bravo Battery 3rd Bn 19th FA From October 1981 to April 1983. 5th ID Mech. (Red Devils)
While in Ft. Polk, I was the driver and No. 1 man on Gun 1. The No. 1 man loaded and fired the gun. We were so short-handed for awhile that I also set the fuses, cut the powder, loaded and fired the gun. It was busy.

Assigned to Bamberg, FRG. Was in HHB 2nd Bn 78th FA from April 1983 to June 1985. (HHB stood for Headquarters and Headquarters Battery) 1st Armored Div. (Old Ironsides)
For some reason when I got to Germany, they made me battalion mail clerk. Hoo-ray! No guard, cp or cq duty. Loved it! I very rarely went to the field except to deliver the mail to the men.

I was in the 5th Infantry Division (Mech) when they were at Ft Carson with HHB 46th Field Artillery Group. I then volunteered for Vietnam and was assigned to the 75th Support Battallion, 1st Infantry Brigade, 5th Infantry Division.
The Brigade was on loan to the Marine Corps, coming under Command And Control of the 3rd Marine Divison, and operated with them from the Khe Sahn Plains to the DMZ.

No, never heard of that society. I'll give it a look.

Thanks for the heads up, Roger.

5th Mech Div's 2nd Bde

Hello,
In 1962, the 2nd Infantry Brigade (separate) at Ft Devens was redesignated as the 2nd Bde of the Reactivated 5th Mech Inf Div under the the new Reorganization of the Army Division (ROAD) concept - correcting the crap inflicted on the Army under the old Pentomic concept. The 2nd Bde, 5th Mech had the 1st and 2nd Bn/2nd Infantry, 1 Bn/77th Armor, and 1 Bn 29th FA, plus some single outfits to round out the bde. The 5th's div HQ and 1st and 3rd Bdes were at Ft Carson. Our Go to War mission was occupation of Iceland - indeed that was the mission of the combat unit (278th RCT, 4th RCT, 2nd Inf Bde, whatever) stationed at Devens during those Cold War years. During Fall 1962, we were tabbed to support 1st Armored Divison if the invasion of Cuba had been executed = which never happened of course. Later on, the 2nd Bde/5th was redesignated as 196th Light Infantry Bde and went to VN, where it was part of the 23rd Americal Division until coming home. For a period of time, there was a 23rd Division museum at Devens, which was deactivated as an active army post about 20 years ago, though it is still an Army Reserve depot area.

I was in the 2nd Infantry Brigade's 3rd Bn 4th Artillery, which merged with the 1st Bn 76th Artillery to become the 1st of the 29th FA when all the changes were made in Spring and Summer 1962. Our 1/29 battery group (A/C Batteries) supported Cadet summer camp at West Point that summer and fired the salute for President Kennedy when he came in June to address the Corps of Cadets. As an added note, Lt Colin Powell was a member of a the 2nd Infantry during that period - the details should be in his autobiography.

Bumping this as I've recently "found" some guys I served with at Ft. Polk. Or rather they found me. Dennis Roebuck was a good friend of mine who was in B Battery's FDC and Monte Briggs and I went through basic together and ended up in the same battery along with one other guy from basic, Jerry Settle. Rather rare that 3 of us ended up in the same battery.

It was nice to hear from them. Dennis is trying to put together some sort of reunion for us. Hopefully he can work out all the details.
