Just remember you can't separate politics from military strategy. Look at what the French Army did in Algeria and DeGaulle walked in and gave it away.

Good point. I hope that means we will only include South Asian politics as any inclusion of US politics would just ruin it. I'd especially like to hear about insights into the problem on the Pakistani side of the border.

Afghanistan strategy?

Hello, Thread
Given the fundamental sociological dysfunction of the region, what is the purpose of the US and NATO in the region? Nation building? Protecting the corrupt "central Government of Karzai"? Facilitating the opium trade?
No one knows and can say.

The former Marine Officer/FSO Hoh, whose well publicized resignation is sparking the chattering class in print, internet, blogs, etc., has a good word for the real situation in Afghanistan: "valleyism".

Try to think out of the box, and consider the region without international boundaries, provincial boundaries , and the fact that people owe allegiance to their families first and foremost (they have little family compounds/forts scattered all about), the tribes and clans. The "Nation"? Forget that fiction of politics. And these families and tribes and clans live their lives in the fantastic tumble of valleys and mountains that is the Land of Cain (for those of the Bible), and in the Backsands of Earth.

There is nothing there the West wants in terms of exploitable resources. Those men and women who seek a different way of life mostly, not all, do find a way out of their existence and move on to modernity. The rest remain behind - perhaps because they can't move on, but given religious fundamentalism, that is what is ordained by "god".

The US and NATO should pull out. As for the Taliban, and/or al Qaida, that's the Afghans' problem.

We let it be their problem before and then we lost the Twin Towers.

Oh? It was the small Afghan village communities who planned and carried out the terrorist attacks on USA soil on 9/11? Gosh, thanks for pointing that out. I always thought it was Al Queda who had the training camps in and support of the official Afghanistan government at that time. Sure glad to know what's what. Tell us more, we want to know.

A attribute for structured debate :
1 Do U.S Army can win the ground battle for the valleys with more troops?
2 Does it cost to much manpower ?
3 Does it cost to much money?
4 What about pakistan border uncontrolled areas ?
5 What about Vietnam learned experiences, and others (fallujah succes, somaly errors, last weaks guerillas (sri lanka, colombia ...)?

For my part i think that there is no military danger for NATO in Afganistan, and responses are politics.

why we fight?

IMO the chance of more terror attacks on Europe or the USA shall hardly increase in case the US and NATO mission decide to leave Afghanistan.
The reason that NATO and US are in Afghanistan, namely that terrorists need Afghanistan as free heaven in order to plan their actions, is not a very valid one.
The planning, coordination and preparation of terror attacks can be done from anywhere. Terrorists do not need Afghanistan to do this.
The Al-Qaeda training camps in Afghanistan did not play a big role in the 9/11 operation. The real work, the planning by Khaled Sheik Mohammed, was done outside of these camps. The preparations took place in apartments in Germany, in hotel rooms in Spain and in flight schools in the USA.
On top of that: if a group really needs a free haven it doesn't need Afghanistan. It could also go to Pakistan, to Yemen or Somalia. So US and NATO forces remaining in Afghanistan does make indeed a small difference but IMO hardly worth the enormous expenses.

Our analysis will be posted in the next 1-2 days.

Two different analysts each choose two different approaches and explain why...and then the other has a chance to make a rebutal. So it is like a mini debate.

After reading both...all I can say is I would not relish being the one to make this decision.
