Here is the story on CNN's website.
http://www.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/europe...ize/index.html
in part it says:
The first African-American to win the White House, Obama was praised by the Norweigan Nobel Committee for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples."

Because its not the nobel war prize obviously. The peace prize goes to persons that try to comunicate with the enemy. The german chancelor Willy Brandt got one when he "betrayed" germany in the views of the far right by talking to the comunists. Comunists cant be reasoned with because they hate liberty, freedom and the west, but he did it anyway.
And now we are reunified without a propper war. Curses!
Domestic policies, olympic games etc. are not taken into account. Normally they are given to aging dictators though, that feel that their end has come and in preperation for whatever afterlife they expect cut back on executing their own population... a bit...

As he gets his peace award for diplomacy, more troops are coming home in coffins.

Thats my take on it as well. I would have no problem with Obama getting the prize if he were to, say, resolve the Iran problem diplomatically. . .
. . . but all he has done so far is talk about wanting peace. Nothing has really changed in the short time between when Bush left office and today.
Oh well, I am glad it happened. Maybe it means that people in Europe are liking the US a bit better, hey?

I do find this extraordinary, winning a Nobel prize is not an honorary achievement or true acknowledgment of your work it seems....

Mmmm Mmmm Mm
The committee that runs his trust has been out of touch with reality for years. That has happened to many of the foundations set up by their rich benefactors over the years. They get taken over by the Left and start awarding grants to their leftist causes.
A list of those foundations in the United States that support leftist causes and the money given to them. http://www.activistcash.com/
Nobel has to be rolling in his grave.

I have to admit this is beyond me too.
Have the Nobel prizes become like Academy Awards then? Almost meaningless?

The Nobel Peace Prize has long been used to stick a thumb into the eye of America; I'd say this is business as usual.
Obama has not one but TWO wars going, and he is refusing to stop either one of them. This does not strike me as obvious peacemaking. Right now he's deciding whether to escalate in Afghanistan or continue losing as usual with the troops we have there or get out.
So the prize may be coercive: these Europeans, no nation of which wants to be in Afghanistan at all and most refusing to allow their troops to fight, may be hoping that he'll be too embarrassed to accept the Nobel Peace Prize and then immediately announce he's sending 40,000 more troops to fight in Afghanistan.
Sheeeeeeeeesh. This is all so crazy, and sort of disgusting, IMO.
