If you don't know about Bud Wilkinson, you should. His Oklahoma teams won 47 straight games between 1953 and 1957. Think about that for a minute. Its truly astounding. Heck, it almost made him governor of Oklahoma.

This tough Irish sonofabitch has not only won a slew of state and national titles, has not only sired two NBA players, but can boast a graduation rate in excess of 90% -- all of this from a tiny and perpetually broke diocesan high school in rough-and-tumble Jersey City, NJ. He never actively recruits, yet kids commute two-plus hours to play for him, kids talented enough to play at dedicated NBA factories like Christ the King HS. Hurley is terse and demanding. He runs his practices like a Roman centurion. He sets goals and expects them met. Most importantly, he tolerates nothing short of full-out effort. He's more than a coach: he's an educator, and a philosopher -- cast from the same mold as a Vince Lombardi or a John Wooden. We really need to find where guys like Hurley come from, and start mass producing them, 'cause we need leaders like him now more then ever.
