Ancient humans may have reached Americas 100,000 years earlier than thought

EXCERPT:
In a provocative and controversial claim, scientists say a scattering of bones and stones suggests ancestral humans reached the New World more than 100,000 years earlier than previously thought.

Most genetic and archaeological evidence shows humans first entered the Americas some 15,000 years ago. But a study nearly 25 years in the making in this week’s Nature finds that the 130,000-year-old bones of a mastodon, an extinct relative of the mammoth, unearthed in California were split open with blows from rocks. Rocks discovered near the bones bear the hallmarks of use as hammers, the scientists report.

The smashed bones may have been the handiwork of a Neanderthal, the scientists say, or the more ancient human relative called Homo erectus, or even our own species, Homo sapiens.

“We are making a claim that’s kind of out there,” acknowledges study co-author Daniel Fisher of the University of Michigan. “We have had to toil over years to make sure we have considered every angle.”

Experts not involved in the study, however, question the claim, in part because of the total lack of other evidence of a human presence so long ago.

A student found an ancient Canadian village that’s 10,000 years older than the Pyramids

EXCERPT:
...
For hundreds — perhaps thousands — of years, generations of the Heiltsuk Nation, an indigenous group in British Columbia, have passed down the oral histories of where they came from. The nation claims that its ancestors fled for survival to a coastal area in Canada that never froze during the Ice Age.

A new excavation on Triquet Island, on British Columbia's Central Coast, has now backed up that claim, according to local news outlet CBC.

Archaeologist Alisha Gauvreau, a doctoral student from the University of Victoria and a scholar with the research institute Hakai, led a team that excavated the site in late 2016. They discovered several artifacts from what appears to be an ancient village, including carved wooden tools and bits of charcoal, in a thin horizontal layer of soil, called paleosol.

The team sent the charcoal flakes to a lab for carbon dating and found that the pieces date back between 13,613 to 14,086 years ago, thousands of years before Egypt built its pyramids.

The artifacts are some of the oldest found in North America. In 1977, Washington State University archaeologists excavated a spear tip and mastodon rib bone (an extinct species related to elephants) near Washington’s Olympic Peninsula. After CT scans in 2011, the fossils pushed estimates of the earliest human habitation on the West Coast back by 800 years (to about 13,800 years before present day).

The latest discovery will help archaeologists understand with more detail how more North American civilizations like the Heiltsuk Nation began. One popular theory is that the first native North Americans ventured from Asia over an ice-free, Alaskan land bridge to what is now western and central Canada during the Ice Age.

Another theory, which the University of Victoria's research supports, is that they were sea mammal hunters and travelled by boat.

What the **** have pyramids to do with anything? There is lots of evidence that mankind was spreading round the globe long before then.

Good question for the article author, but the main point here seems to be confirmation of that earlier time-line spread. I'd guess the (Egyptian) Pyramid tag is for a rather "general" audience reference point.

It's called "puffing." This is one of those PC moves to elevate indigenous peoples in the Americas from pre-historic times forward to equal footing with the great civilizations of history. Doesn't matter they never left the stone age. Suddenly they're ahead of the Egyptians for making fire, having stone spear points, and living in villages...

But not necessarily indigenous to where we live - we are all descended from indigenous Africans.

Most Mesoamerican culture was stone age, and yet their mathematics was often light years beyond medieval Europe, a society thousands of years later. Their (Americano) cultures astronomy was outstanding.
