Here is a Soviet newsreel covering the end of the blockade during Operation Iskra, in January 1943.

I can't imagine how intimidating it would have been to be in a defensive position hearing thousands of Soviet troops screaming "Урааа!!!" while charging at me guns blazing.

Kids' drawings made during the Siege (Siege of Leningrad museum)

I want to eat so much! Hunger.

Gera Rostov, 9 y/o

(*note - this word "hunger" was written in pre-Revolutionary spelling for some reason)

Daddy, I'm wounded but alive. Mila. October 1941

Uncle Filya died today. March 1942

(*note - in Russian the word "uncle" is also used by small children as an address to any, usually familiar, adult)

For a reason or another some of those picture just get to me, creep me out. It's like looking at ghosts.

Look at the officer next to the living young man. He stares right back at you.

Imagine walking down the street in Europe and seeing flashes like those pictures

There's a very impressive video based on pics by Sergey, modern day images of St. Petersburg slowly fade to reveal what these places looked like during the Siege. There are no words spoken, so there would be no language difficulties for the international audience.

Open this page: http://er.ru/time/

Then scroll it down to the bottom and click on a video section in the lower left part of the screen. Although the quality isn't perfect I recommend to watch it in full screen mode.

...Wow.
I have rarely seen a video that impressed me so much.
Every Russian should see it, or at least everyone in St-Petersburg.

The funny thing is that it's hosted by the website of Putin's "United Russia" party. Well, at least they could spend a small part of these billions on something useful.

I just wish more Americans would appreciate how little they did and how much the Russian People did to win the war. Thanks for sharing the point of view.

..the biggest difference is that WW 2didnt happen on the US mainland, that is why there is so little commonality between the two people, if the Japs had invaded the US and stayed and fought for years then maybe people in the US would have greater undertsanding and respect for what the people of Russia experienced, but then again if you never lived through it how can you possibly understand..??

A great collection indeed. Just think of walking on the street where many Soviet civilians and soldiers who defended Leningrad had been makes you shiver and proud, isn't it ? I never know what war like but by the pictures, now I know and understand, "war is hell".
