The "old & new" composite pictures are incredibly well done and both beautiful and eerie at the same time. You sure wouldn't forget them. Thanks for sharing.

That is really amazing. I went there in 2007 just after Victory Day, and to see the former "high water" marks of the fighting around the city is quite eye-opening. While we have that in the southern United States, at national parks like Shiloh and Sharpsburg, it is ancient history compared to the scars St. Petersburg shows today.

Postwar Russia gets bad marks for xenophobia. But seeing what its cities went through close-up, one can at least appreciate its determination to avoid going through a horror like that again. It certainly makes the debate less black-and-white.

A good documentary clip about the Siege

A clipping of different documentaries showing the life in besieged Leningrad:

- evacuation of one of Baron Klodt's horse statues from its pedestal on Anichkov Bridge across Fontanka river. The statues, being highly valuable pieces of art (as Nicholas I said, Klodt "managed to make horses better than a stallion"), were hidden in specially dug trenches in the park of Anichkov Palace located just next to the bridge.

- damages Atlases of Beloselsky-Belozersky palace

- KV tank driving across Kirovsky (now Troitsky) bridge and turning to the Palace embankment. A Baltic fleet cruiser can be seen in the background

- soldiers marching along the grating of the Summer Garden, Kirovsky bridge and the Peter and Paul's cathedral can be seen in the background

- exhibition of propaganda posters; advertisements posted by people who wanted to barter their furniture and kitchenware for food and cigarettes

- frozen trolley-buses on Cavalry Guards boulevard; pair pulling a sleigh with a coffin loaded on it

- Leo Tolstoy square; people carrying buckets of water they had to get from street taps, rivers/canals or even burst pipelines

- frozen cars and trucks on the street and people trying to break the ice around them; people wading through snowdrifts and ice

Where have you seen any Soviet atrocities here? Or is it yet another "moral equivalence" statement?

Just found a site with a whole treasure trove of Siege of Leningrad pictures - a collection of photos mad by D. Trakhman, a famous war photocorrespondent. I've split them into several topics.

Leningrad women at war

An all-female firefighters brigade lined up on the Nevsky prospect by the Kazan cathedral.

Marksmanship training

AA observers on the top of Postal Service's workers community centre (former Lutheran church)

Thankfully the Germans didn't have anything like the Bomber Command. And the antiaircraft defense was pretty good.

Many facades were reconstructed, and all the major monuments survived, except the Peterhof Palace you can see on one of the photos.

There are more pics here: http://izismile.com/2009/02/27/lenin...w_15_pics.html

Speaking of the buildings, here is one of the comments: "The first thing i thought was, geeze in 60+ years they have built NO NEW BUILDINGS! hooray for communisim! down with progress!"

Just how ridiculously ignorant can one be?

Something has been lost in translation in this statement I think. Do you mean at leningrad specifically? Or in the war in the east in general.

Both sides have so much blood on their hands that it is up to their shoulders from the eastern front. The war in the east was just a massive bloodletting, period. Atrocities, counter atrocities, revenge, vengence, hatred, all mixed together to form the most destructive and violent conflict in human history.

By the way, those are great pictures. Absolutely impressive. I plan on visiting St. Petersburg within the next couple of years, by the look of it I won't be dissapointed!

Nothing seems to be lost here. I meant this thread, as he started speaking about the Soviet atrocities while the tread is obviously related to the German ones.

The very way you're putting it implies some kind of moral equivalence here. By making broad statements like this one loses the ethical side of the war from his sight: whose cause was just and whose wasn't. This is equal to saying that the work of the police is all bloody and dirty business (which is true to an extent), while in fact it's about helping and saving people.
