Rokitna 1915 - great cavalry charge

12th June 1915, units of IIcd Brigade of Piłsudski's Polish Legions were placed near Rokitna village. Poles, along with 42cd Infantry Division tried to take village, but Russians fight valiantly and were not pushed back. 13th positions of 42cd Division was seriously attacked by Russian counterattack, so at noon it was decided that the second and third squadron of Ulans under command of rotmistrz Dunin-Wąsowicz will attack Russians in Rokitna in order to relief 42cd Division. Polish cavalry had to therefore break through three lines of Russian trenches.

Dunin-Wąsowicz personally lead the charge. After crossing muddy terrain near Rokitnianka River, he placed 3rd squadron in reserve and attack with 2cd. In 15 minutes Ułani came through three lines of enemy tranches, making great chaos and killing some Russians soldiers. Out of 64 Poles from 2cd squadron - only six made in to the friendly lines. Success of cavalry was however lost, because of not sufficient infantry support.

Dunin-Wąsowicz

The charge

Any other good stories about cavalry from I WW?

But they weren't cavalry, they were mounted infantry..............so no sabres slashing, just sword type bayonets.

Cavalry vs cavalry

http://www.military-art.com/mall/more.php?ProdID=1740

On 7 September 1914, at Moncel, Lieutenant-Colonel David Campbell led a charge of two troops of B Squadron of the 9th Queen's Royal Lancers and overthrew a squadron of the German 1st Guard Dragoons.

A small but very interesting affair.
