Books On The French And Indian War

I hope that this will get stickied.
Does anyone have any other book suggestions on this overlooked period of early American history?

This is my one and only book on the French And Indian War and it's fantastic.

John, I've read two of his books and always wondered whether or not he writes historical fiction or history. His books, that I've read, are so dense with facts that if it's fiction it's darn close to being history. Wilderness Empire is the one I remember the most and I read that over 20 years ago. I do need to find some more of his books and read them.

PS-I've got a laptop now so no more long silences from me.

I found this link to Eckert's books. The man has been prolific!

Excellent choice! Eckert is one of my favorite historical authors that writes about that time period. "Wilderness Empire" is another of his excellent works about the French and Indian War. If you get a chance, read "The Frontiersman", the story of the life and times of Simon Kenton. For my money, Kenton was a far greater patriot and frontiersman than Daniel Boone.

"Crucible of War" is the book on the Seven Years' War in North America. If you only read one book on the war, it should be Anderson's. Now, here are a few more:

Redcoats: The British Soldier and War in the Americas, 1755-1763 by Stephen Brumwell.

White Devil: A True Story Of War, Savagery, And Vengeance In Colonial America by Stephen Brumwell.

Paths Of Glory: The Life And Death Of General James Wolfe by Stephen Brumwell.

Breaking The Backcountry: The Seven Years' War In Virginia And Pennsylvania 1754-1765 by Matthew C. Ward.

Betrayals: Fort William Henry and the Massacre by Ian K. Steele.

Wolfe at Quebec: The Man Who Won the French and Indian War
by Christopher Hibbert.

Montcalm and Wolfe
by Francis Parkman.

The Annotated and Illustrated Journals of Major Robert Rogers edited by Timothy J. Todish.

Sons of the Mountains: The Highland Regiments in the French and Indian War, 1756-1767 Vols. 1 & 2 by Ian McPherson McCulloch.

Drums In The Forest: Decision At The Forks, Defense In The Wilderness by Alfred Proctor James, Charles Morse Stotz.

Siege 1759 : The Campaign Against Niagara
by Brian L. Dunnigan.

Walter Borneman's The French and Indian War: Deciding the Fate of North America ought to be on this list, too.

So should Alan Axelrod's excellent 2007 book Blooding at Great Meadows: Young George Washington and the Battle that Shaped the Man. If you want to understand Washington the soldier, you have to understand his role in the French and Indian War, and, in particular, in his first major engagement.

With Kenton that is one of the great injustice of American History. Just about everybody knows of Boone and Crockett but only those of us that take a real interest in the period know about Kenton.

That Dark and Bloody River I found especialy interesting as a lot of it deals with the settlement of my home town. In one passage he speaks of Indians crossing the river over the island I grew up on and moving down what later became the street I lived on.

Montcalm and Wolfe (or vice versa) by Francis Parkham is another very good book on the era.

As for Ekert, I have loved his books too. I understand that his books are a bit of a combination of history and fiction.
He once wrote that all the facts contained in his books (names, dates, quotes, events) are true.

A second vote for Borneman. I'm currently about 2/3 of the way through the above mentioned work and it's quite comprehensive. Borneman has also written excellent books about the War of 1812 and arguably the best book about President Polk.

White Devil is also very good and anyone interested in Roger's and his Rangers will find it a must read.

Part of the lack of general knowledge regarding Kenton stems from him using the alias Butler for part of his life. My ancestor William Whitley was another contemporary of Kenton.

Lance,

I guess great minds think alike. I have all three of Borneman's books that you talk about I really enjoyed all three. I also have, and agree on White Devil. Below I have listed a few others from the F&I period and one from right before that period

Seeds Of Discontent The Deep Roots of the American Revolution 1650-1750

1759 The Year Britain Became Master of The World

White Savage William Johnson and The Invention of America

The Scratch of The Pen 1763 and the Transformation of North America.
