Great idea, Stephane!

I served with the 12th TFW (Avionics Maintenance Squadron) at Phu Cat AB from June 1970 to June 1971.

Our base was Di An and operated north of there, south in the Thu Duc area, and north around Lai Khe, some unknown place south, then north up Hwy 13(Thunder Road) to just south of An Loc.

Sorry, that was 1st Bn. 18th Infantry, BRO in 1968

Paul and Half Pint--I am actually worse than both of you and it was my Division. I had always spelled it out but recently saw BRO, not like "hey Bro" that I thought the first time I saw it, so I am the slowest learner. But I have always known, "If you're going to be one, be a Big Red One."

*an off subject historical note: My Div. CO, Maj. Gen. Ware was drafted in WWII, won Medal of Honor at Bastogne (Battle of the Bulge) and was KIA in Vietnam when his chopper went down in late '68.

Boonie I have been out to the AO many times. I have alot of pictures. Lai Khe is still in rubber trees but thats all, the clear cut that was the air field is the only way I found it. Been to Loc Ninh and Dau Tiang, the bases there are more defined and the landing strips are still intact. Old part of Tay Ninh still exists as does the Cao Dia Temple. An Loc was blown off the map in 72 so no fire support bases or sites are recognizable. There is a wonderfully preserved area south of Loc Ninh that was the staging area of the NVA who came down the HCM trail or were offloaded in Cambodia. Remnants of unfilled bomb craters, bunkers, well worn trails sent a chill up my spine, riding my little yamaha we got lost but my trusty knock-off GI compass got us out ok, about 6 ks down the road from the entrance, that is why I was only a spec 4, lol. Ben Cat is essentially the same as the new Highway 13 bypasses the city. Di An is absorbed into the HCMC now, the streets paved by the BRO are lined with warehouses, some of those sporting American company names. Nui Ba Den has a temple on the top with a tram that goes over what is a Vietnamese amusement park now. I have not got the hang of posting pictures yet but I have a friend (Doc,navy corpman/marine recon, computer whizz) here who will help me get a handle on it so the, then and now, can be compared. I am not sure about Phuc Vinh, been by the site but didn't really know what to look for as I was never stationed there. Got great shots of Da Nang, Marble Mountain, the Imperial Palace in Hue, but they are mostly scenic. In Feb. I plan on taking a trip up the new road that parallels the HCM trail on the western border, starting with Ap Bau Bang and following it north to Rte 9 and the A Shau Valley ending up in Da Nang. Should be interesting, it goes through some pretty deserted areas, the motorcycle ride alone will be a challenge for this 59 y.o. body.
