Welcome to the 100 Greatest Westerns Tournament. We took a list of the 100 best westerns, grouped them by date of release, and then alphabetically. Please vote for the eight best westerns from 1974-2008. The poll may be private, but we look forward to comments and discussion. If some of the titles sound familiar, but you need a brush-up try http://www.imdb.com.

I am guessing that Tombstone is going to walk away with the most votes in this section. Any challengers?

I'm surprised Lonesome Dove isn't on here.

Maybe because it was made for TV?

Had to vote for Dead Man, big fan of Jim Jarmush, but I'm not sure it qualifies as a Western

That's my favorite western of all time, but I think it got left off becuase its a mini-series. I know Band of Brothers doesn't always count as a war movie for the same reason.

I would've voted for Last of the Mohegans but I'd classify it as an "Eastern"!

I love the Movie Tombstone.
It's so beefy.
Makes me want to hit people.
Defile myself.
Drink excessively.
Shoot guns into ceilings.

Voted for 8 movies here but my dark horse candidate would be Open Range, a vastly underrated western. I'm not a big Costner or Duvall fan, but in this movie they were great. Especially the scene where Costner confronts the hired gunman who killed his friend. Doesn't even give the man a chance to draw, just blasts him. No remorse at all.

There was another made for TV western starring Tom Selleck and Keith Carradine, and I forget the name of it. It was on TNT IIRC. It was towards the end of the cowboy days and Carradine goes into the hardware business and gets killed by a former cowboy that was friends with him and Selleck. For the life of me I can't remember the name of this movie. It was a good one though. Anybody got the answer?

What happened to Silverado?

One of the best escapist films in the genre IMHO.

Josey Wales is still my #1 pick here though.
