U.S. advisors, material support, and sometimes American fighting men were very evident in almost every conflict with forces allied to the Soviet Union during the Cold War.
Korea 1950
French Occupation of Vietnam
French Occupation of Algeria
South Vietnam
Mozambique
Central American death squads and contras in Nicaragua
Israel
Turkey
Etc, etc, etc.
The U.S.S.R. may have had blood on its hands, but the U.S.A.s weren't clean either.

Some of those are bad examples though. Korea War particularly, since that was a UN mandate and it wasn't just American money or covert ops but actual regular America troops. Not to mention I'd toss Vietnam and Algeria with Soviet backing US enemies not US backing Soviet ones.

My point was that the U.S.A. intervened in more places than just Afghanistan. With money, weapons, sometimes troops.
As far as Vietnam and Algeria go, exactly when did the Vietminh and the FLN become America's enemies? In both cases the American government backed the French, who were trying to re- impose colonial rule on unwilling populations.

Because they fought against American allies. Up until 1966, France was still a NATO member, so if you want keep your point up about supporting each others enemies, then the Soviets started by supporting an enemy of an American ally. In most of your examples, the Soviets simply picked their "allies" by whomever was fighting the West.

But let's back up here: the debate here isn't whether the US should have gotten involved in Vietnam (that can be taken up in the Vietnam forum), nor is it even what the US or the now defunct Soviet Union have done in the past. It is about an unverified Russian claim of American (non governmentally to boot) involvement in Georgia. Has it been confirmed that there were even US mercenaries there? Has it been confirmed that the US government actively supported the Georgian military against the RF? Unless I've missed something, I do not think so.

There are Americans just about everywhere so flogging up a few to feed a political agenda is no great trick. The title of the article was deliberately worded to imply U.S. Government involvement in the combat. This is in direct conflict of course to the much larger number of U.S. personnel who were present on a publically announced training mission well before the start of the conflict. These troops were interview several times during the fighting and remained well away from the ground combat.

Apparently the Russians knew were they were as well as no bombs were dropped in close proximity to US-Geogian training site AFAIK.

agreed.

and while i don't doubt the integrity of Reuters in reporting; i'm might have to take the source with a lot of salt...considering the un-announced cold war being propo'ed by the hard line Sov's, in Russian leadership roles, in the past 18 months...

if anyone doubts it.... they clueless.

Have you been watching "Shadow Force" on the History Channel?

Seems like mercenaries definitely have a place in today's world. Just imagine how effective a couple of blimps and a few high-speed chaser ships would be against pirates?

(in WW2, not a single convoy escorted by blimps ever lost a ship)

Putin and Co were commies and members of the Soviet communist party. So you can call them either commies or betrayers of communism who became bourgeois prostitutes ( as Putin's KGB used to say) as well as the betrayers of their motherland USSR which they swore to defend and nasty time-servers on the whole

Personally I suppose they are the latter.

So there is only one option left. Putin and Co are betrayers of communism who became bourgeois prostitutes ( as Putin's KGB used to say) as well as the betrayers of their motherland USSR which they swore to defend and nasty time-servers on the whole
