Reuters Russia says U.S. mercenaries, others fought for Georgia

Quote:
ST PETERSBURG, Russia (Reuters) – Russia has evidence that citizens from NATO member states including the United States and Turkey fought for Georgia in the five-day August war, Russia's top investigator said on Monday.

A senior security official in Tbilisi dismissed the statement and said by law only Georgian nationals could serve in the country's armed forces.

Asked to list the nationalities of the foreign fighters it believes were involved, Alexander Bastrykin, head of the Prosecutor-General's investigative committee said: "America, the Czech Republic, Chechnya, the Baltic States, Ukraine and Turkey."

"It was a fairly small number of people. They mainly fulfilled support roles," Bastrykin told reporters in Russia's second city of St Petersburg.

He said some had conducted training for the Georgian armed forces. "There were also two snipers ... one from Ukraine and I believe a Latvian woman," he said.

He said he considered the presence of foreign fighters a criminal offence and said he would bring it up at a meeting with representatives of Interpol.

Russia launched a massive counter-offensive on land and sea in August after Georgian forces tried to retake South Ossetia, a Moscow-backed separatist region that rejects Tbilisi's rule.

Western states condemned Russia's actions as disproportionate, but Moscow said it acted to save the lives of innocent civilians and accused the West of fomenting the conflict by arming Georgia.

Responding to Bastrykin's allegation, Kakha Lomaia, the Secretary of Georgia's National Security Council, told Reuters: "It's really difficult to make comments on such absurd statements."

"There are only Georgian citizens in the Georgian army as it's a legal requirement."

"The statement that almost half of the world was fighting in our army in August is just a fantasy of those in the Russian leadership who would like to justify killings of the peaceful population," he said.

Ah, the ancient russian enemy, latvian female snipers, rears its ugly head again.

Well, they are mercenaries. I'm pretty sure they will fight for whoever pays them enough. Maybe.

hmm ok so it is illegal for those from other nations to fight against the Russians. But crossing the border between Osetia and Georgia without any international debate is not.

Just for those that are going to point anything out about Iraq at least the US went to the UN Council for about 12 years before invading Iraq.

Latvians and Estonians will pay someone themselves NOT to serve under Russians, even if they are mercenaries and are out of work for a while...

With the US mercenaries - these looked more like military advisors from US government, which were shown as mercenaries when caught to deny any Uncle Sam's involvement in the conflict...

Thumbs down Reuters reported that Russian officials claim evidence ...

That would be the correct thread title ...

Russian paranoia seems so much progressed that we should be on the watch
especially if Russian pyramidal economy is collapsing.
Maybe Russian invasion into Georgia was already a red herring
to incite racial and chauvinist activities inside Russia
covering up the fast decline of Russian economy in 2008.

But what a magical mystery tour of a Russian prosecutor;
is he the same guy who is unable to let count civilian deads
on few squarekilometres in South Ossetia within 3,5 months
and unable to release an acceptable report or at least a summary?

If reuters reports correctly it must have been a ridiculous event:
Bastrykin claims evidence and cannot approve it;
he is dropping some nations' names
and obviously named no exact or est. figures (except: fairly small number of people) ...
OK .. we know this prosecutor has problems to count to 100, 200, 300 ...
but that he must believe ( and not know) that one sniper is a Latvian woman ... OMG

Next spring we will probably hear
that an army of female Latvian snipers has invaded Kalinigrad/Königsberg region.

After such appearances
I know why some Russian friends telling from "Putin's Villages".

Georgia started this war by shelling-dead 2000 peaceful citizens of Tsinvali. But hey, I'd actually like for these mercenary speculations to not be true!

The figure of 2,000 dead in Tshinvalli is the crazy fruit of the Russian propaganda machine which was mentioned only at the beginning of the conflict. That figure could not stand any water and is not repeated even by the Russian state media any longer.

Today the Kremlin and its Ossetian henchmen speak about only 311 South Ossetians dead. It is clear that RF troops are responsible for civilian losses among Ossetians as well.

Clownesque ... when the case wouldn't be so serious.

2000 and more civilian deads belong to the invasion justifying knowingly false accusations
made by Putin in the first days of war ...

Tskhinvali was nearly completely evacuated by Kokoity regime like the border regions with beginning August 2008.

Russian prosecutors are counting and counting for months
.. but their figures don't change really since September ..
anywhere between 300 and 400 ..
and it's still not clear whether combatants are included in these figures or not.

Probably Kokoity's "army" ( ethnic South ossetian militias) had suffered the heavy losses calculated by Russia as Sanakoev predicted
( dying for Putin's pride and South Ossetia's dependence as Y. Latynina analyzed)
which must be anyway "distributed".

Hey, that would only make me happy. But even 200 would be too much. Even 2 would be too much.

Florian - I'm glad you have a solid set of "probablies" and excuses to make you secure in your beliefs.
