"Best" British Line Infantry Regiments

I know that none of them are "elite", but do any of them have better reputations than most due to past exploits? I know the Argylls are known for the Crimean and Aden. The South Wales Borderers are known for the Zulu wars and the Glosters are known for the Imjin, but are there any others?
On the flip side, are any known for having a bad reputation?
I know that with the new large regiments, many of the old titles are gone, so let's pretend this is 1914.

Glad you mentioned the Argylls my Dads old mob!! The Royal Sussex Reg: prior to the second world war were known for their service in the middle east (Attempting) to keep the peace in Palestine and surrounding areas. And if you are mentioning possible elites you cannot go past the Grenadier Guards and OF COURSE the Royal Marines!!! ( That should get 'em squawking!!)

You're welcome. I kept it with just infantry of the line because I knew that Fighting Mick would jump in with the Guards...

Yes, I do. I also know that they aren't part of the British Army, which is why I didn't include them.

Wink Someone has to be in the firing line...

I would like to mention several Regiments that I like: The Border Regiment, The Kings Own Scottish Borderers, The Buff Howards, The Green Howards, and The Honorable Artillery Company. (This IS 1914, right? The HAC had an Infantry component!)

Any Light Infantry and Rifle Unit was also good.

According to John Keegan in "Six Armies in Normandy", the CO of the 6th Duke of Wellingtons tried to get his Battalion disbanded as shot and no longer any good. He was relieved.

Well I can tell by the way you answered you are too much of a smart arse to allow yourself to be told anything but I will say this to you, whether the infantry comes from the army or the sea it is still INFANTRY and therefore on those grounds you SHOULD have included them!!

I have always had a soft spot for the Black Watch,
IMO the most stylish of the Highland regiments.

Yes the Black Watch are top notch, but they are a Highland Regiment. The thread is about Line Regiments.

The Highland Regiments are Line Regiments. Line regiments includes any except for the Guards. They are the old, numbered regiments.

They weren't included since I consider them an elite, just like the Paras.

Actually, the Highland Regiments are considered an elite. If you are talking about Line Regiments you are talking about normal Infantry Battalions like any County Regiment. The King's Royal Rifle Corps, The Rifle Brigade, and the several Light Infantry regiments are also considered elites. The different corps all had a pecking order.

If you wanted a Scot Line Regiment, you might consider the Royal Scots or the King's own Scottish Borderers, but not the Highland Light Infantry.

Many years ago Lord Churchill could not get his son Winston into the 60th Rifles (KRRC), because Young Winnie scored so badly at Sandhurst he only could qualify for the Cavalry. The 60th was the most elite Infantry Regiment at the time outside the Guards Regiments.

I can't say if the Blues/Royals was on a par with the Guards, but someone else can probably chime in.
