A Hungarian view of the S. Ossetian Conflict

Found this interview which I think gives at least one other view from Eastern Europe about the actions of Russia in S. Ossetia. He is clear that he doesn't speak for his government, only his own view.

Quote:
MJT: It has been argued recently that Georgia may not have started this conflict, that Russia was moving its troops into Georgia before Saakashvili supposedly provoked the Russians. But you're telling me that you instinctively assumed Russia started it.

Dr. Eörsi: It was not clear to me when I was in Budapest because of what the international media was reporting. It was not very clear to me. Now I understand more facts. It is very important for European public opinion to understand more about what happened here, and also what is at stake. Yes, Georgia was provoking Russia. I agree. Georgia was provoking Russia by deciding its future, by deciding its alliances, by deciding its democratic structure, deciding for its leaders. Russia perceived all this as a provocation. If so, then Georgia provoked Russia. But I fully disapprove that a country can be provoked by democratic decisions about where a country would like to go.

What is at stake in Russia...Russia lost the Baltic countries that were part of the Soviet Union. There was a huge fight in Ukraine and in Georgia whether the leaders of these countries will remain under the umbrella of Russia. Russia punished them for their decision not to remain under their sphere of influence but to run an independent foreign policy. Russia doesn't want to approve this, and I find it totally unacceptable.

Dont you just love the Hungarians?

Almost alone among the people of Europe, they can cut right though the B.S. and spell it right out. It's one of the very few places I have never been to and would like to see.

Wow a totally broad statement filled with nothing but stamps. Yes, by attacking Tsinhavali with artillery and moving in troops on Aug 8, Georgia was not "provoking" Russia in any real way but "deciding its alliances, by deciding its democratic structure, deciding for its leaders".

Thanks for clearing that up, Dr. Eörsi!

****in' LOL!

Right, right, whatever. It's a dead subject, the country 20 times bigger won, big surprise!

But then, there still remains this; . Georgia was provoking Russia by deciding its future, by deciding its alliances, by deciding its democratic structure, deciding for its leaders. Russia perceived all this as a provocation.

Same thing as Poland wanting a whole, whopping 10 anti-ICBM missiles.

BTW- where exactly IS Tsinhavali, and what was it bombarded by?

Come on... I mean no freakin' wonder. You don't even know the basic facts here, yet are so opinionated!

Tsinhavali is the capital of S. Ossetia, this whole thing started when Georgian artillery (Grad rockets) opened up on the town during the night of Aug 7-8, and then Georgian troops went in in the morning.

Right, SOUTH Ossetia. Now, if this is not Russian territory, how was this a provocation of Russia?

When Russian troops opened fire on the capital of Chechnya, should Georgia have been "provoked" ?

After all, the situation was the same; a break-away fragment of the larger whole was leaving... but I guess the double-standard that Russia demands can rationalize the destruction of Chechen independence, while demanding that little bits and pieces be chipped away from the terribly dangerous and mighty Georgian collossus.

And there is also the president; Mainila. Ask Finland what that means to them... and then justify the Soviet invasion of that nation.

Jesus, are you serious? This is like its Aug 8 all over again, how much exactly don't you know?

Do you think Chechniya was a part of Georgia or something? The Georgian attack killed Russian citizens and soldiers.

You really don't know anything about this, do you? Or are you just being a pest? Were you so busy ranting & raving that you didn't actually read anything 8 months ago?

The Russian soldiers were in S.Ossetia according to the Russian-Georgian peacekeeping mission which was backed by the OSCE.

Criticisms of this arrangement to trust peacekeeping to 2 biased sides are valid in hindsight, but at the time the OSCE and the sides involved didn't find another solution.

Then there was the matter of lots of Ossetians holding Russian citizenship, which were the civilians that got killed.

When and if N. and S. are gonna reunite, I don't know, maybe never. On paper S. is still part of the Republic of Georgia.

Actually, it was less than 6 months ago.

The abusive, deliberately insulting nature of your posts shows that either you take this very personally, or the Russians were wrong and you know it, or both.

I paid little attention to the whole thing because I wanted the dust to settle before I got into it. It seems that there is still a lot of emotion here, even in response to simple questions.

Sorry guys, just because you berate me and try to make me look stupid, I will not look the other way and just let Russia get away with anything Putin wants to do. Just the opposite, as a matter of fact.

Russia acted like that because the US decided to encourage and recognize Kosovo's declaration of independence in 2008. Don't forget Serbia had friendly relations with Russia and NATO bombed it in 1999, then put troops on part of its territory and later on encouraged and recognized that territory's secession.
