One Canadian Forces member was killed yesterday, December 18th, 2010, after an improvised explosive device detonated while on operations in the Panjwa'i district of Kandahar Province, at approximately 12:30 p.m. local time.

Killed in action was Corporal Steve Martin, from 3rd Battalion, Royal 22e Regiment, serving with 1st Battalion, Royal 22e Regiment Battle Group.

Our thoughts are with the families and friends of our fallen soldier during this difficult time.

RIP, Steve. [/QUOTE]

This one is more personal.

MSG Eric Hellmuth was my NCOIC when I was Chief of Current Ops in V Corps G3 2003-4. He was a great leader. This was not the job he deployed to do, but he stepped in when there was a vacancy and excelled every day.

He drowned during a training exercise in Romania while swimming on an R&R day. Altho' he was a Reservist attached to the HQ, he was a true warrior and taught us all a lot.

Here is his pic in Iraq rolling north to Baghdad and the article about his death. (He transfered to the 1st AD, IIRC, after we returned from Iraq.)

I second what Admiral says. I have many members of my family who've served,we've lost 3 and the absence grows fonder daily. Without them and men like your dad, this country wouldn't be free.

We've lost a good airman today. Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent was killed when he was run down by a homegrown jihadist in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, South of Montreal - The first such incident in Canada.

I never worked with WO Vincent, but remember him as one of the senior NCOs part of the excellent team that formed 438 Tactical Helicopter Squadron, based in Saint-Hubert, near Montreal.

My prayers and sympathies to the family and friends of WO Vincent.
