Radio Vietnam Logo
As some of you already know, RR and I have a small gig with a Vietnam Vet tribute radio station called Radio Vietnam. We both hope that while you are here surfing the ACG Vietnam forum you are streaming Radio Vietnam in the background for the period music that always sets the proper mood
Anyway, when the station was first started it used a logo that was a direct rip off from full metal Jacket. Here it is.
While that was fine for the early days, we now need something original for the station. Because I have modest artistic talent I have been put in charge of the development of the new logo design. Fortunately we now I have an artist Among us who has agreed to render the drawing. Average John has graciously consented to help us out and I am thrilled.
So far I have developed a concept to begin the process. It is my hope that I can present the concept here for review by the members, and then once we get all the feed back AJ can produce the actual logo. I want this to be a participative process
The concept that I came up with contains three elements.
I decided to stick with the original helmet idea and expand on it.
Most of us are familiar with photos of GI's in Vietnam wearing helmets that have graffiti on them and are festooned with various items like Ammo.
Continued in next post......

The most common item was insect repellent like this photo.
My idea is this. We stay with the helmet concept, but instead of the Bug juice I thought we should put a 60s era transistor radio strapped to the helmet.
And then for the Helmet Graffiti we have the face of a VN girl in the traditional conical hat (called a Poetic leaf).
We have the girl winking and next to her are the words "How are you GI Joe?"
So that is my concept.
Now I open this up to everyone for feedback so we can get john working on the actual drawing.
What do you think?

I like all of those. They all sound great!
My only idea i had was from when we first talked about it i drew an outline of Vietnam with a radio tower coming out the top..pretty generic..

I think you have a terrific concept.
My only suggestion is to be sure that the radio is easily recognizable as a radio...otherwise people might wonder what it is and the impact will be lost.
I think your idea is quite inspired! I would defenitely try it.

Yes. I was worried about that too. I was thinking to help that that the antenna should be extended just a bit maybe.

Station Name
I believe the station name needs to be part of the logo, as in --

This is why we need feedback. To see what people think.
I thought about this. Not all logos have the name associated directly on them so I wasn't sure about this part. It will be important to see what other people think about this too.

No photos on the Helmet. Just graffiti. Some guys drew pictures. Half pint mentioned one with Vultures on it. I thought a cartoonesque picture of a VN girl would be suitable for several reasons. The radio station does play clips of Hanoi Hannah and her Tag line was "How are you GI Joe". By making the girl wink it was my hope to use the Hanoi Hannah line that is played on RadioVietnam but make the girl more Southern in her attitude toward the GIs.
Of course Hendrix would be appropriate. I am sure he was all over GI stuff in Vietnam. But you have to give me something Don. I could not design something for you guys without giving at least a little nod to the Vietnamese. I just can't

And if our ANZAC friends ever show up to give feedback we may have to include something for them too

I realized what you meant in regards to the photo right off. I just meant we could use a photo of something that fit and then render it as graffiti when drawing the helmet. I always wore my beret or floppy hat.
Anyways, as someone who is not artistic, I will look forward to whatever you fine folks come up with and select. Sorry for not making my response a little clearer.

Exactly. The photos I just put there for visual illustration of the concept. The decision on how to render things once we decide will be up to AJ.

Since Helicopters were so big in Vietnam, maybe one in the background coming in to land and pick up the guy with the helmet or boonie hat or whatever he will be wearing.

Yes. The Huey was the most famous feature of the war. I have been thinking of some different things and maybe some revisions of the concept are in order. I will talk to AJ and see what he thinks
