By "historical analogy"...I didn't mean that the events occured at the same time. I meant that the historical circumstances of the conflicts had some similarities.

Well...A lot of US citizens moved into Mexico...Then they decided to break away from Mexico...Mexico wasn't really happy about this...Then the new Republic of Texas decided to join the USA...Now the border between Texas and Mexico had never really been agreed upon...An incident occured between US and Mexican troops in the border area...So the USA invaded Mexico and in exchange for leaving Mexico City...the USA accepted most of Arizona, most of the part of New Mexico not in Texas, Colorado, Utah, Nevada and California as a sort of parting gift. Realizing that Mexico had inadvertantly not turned over parts of Arizona and New Mexico...the USA graciously purchased the rest.

Kind of imagine that the USA is Russia...Texas is Ossetia...and Gerogia is Mexico.

Nice comparison, didn't think about it like that, but I don't think Russia will be buying any land.

I think this will be like the Nazi invasion of France. Russia will take a large chunk of Georgia (if not the whole thing), and leave behind a 'free' state. Like how the Nazis took most of France and left behind a 'free' state.

Not comparing Russia to the Nazis of course.

No analogy is perfect...part of by the definition of the word analogy.

I've been trying to look at this from the Russian point of view and to relate it to some historical example with which Americans can identify.

If the reconquista movement ever became something more than a left-wing-Latino college campus thing...we could find ourselves with a modern analogy. Also...If the Mexican federal gov't can't reign in the narcoterrorism in the border region, we could also have another avenue toward a modern US analogy.

I don't want to hijack this thread but you seem to be implying that the US only paid for the 29,670 square mile Gadsden purchase (southern Arizona and New Mexico). The US also purchased the rest of the Mexican territories obtained in the Mexican war.

With Texas seeming certain to join the US the govt attempted to purchase the disputed Texas border areas with Mexico and the rest of what is now the American Southwest for $34.4 million. After winning the war the US considered the disputed border issue resolved but still purchased the other areas for 18.25 million.

Just to compare this with other large US land purchases in this period.

Louisiana Purchase in 1803: 828,000 square miles $14 million

Mexican territories 1848-1853: 530,000 square miles $28.25 million

Alaskan Purchase in 1867: 663,300 square miles $7.2 million

A million dollars doesn't sound like much now but it was back then. Total US goverment expenditures ranges from $30.9 million in 1836 to 24.3 million in 1840 (only two years I could find quickly in the period I'm sure it was higher for the war year of 1847).

Alta California contained only 1000 Mexican families and Nuevo California 7000.

Yes, but that sub-Forum is specifically devoted to the RKKA in WWII.

It's hardly likely to be capable of dealing with or digesting something like Georgia and South Ossetia in today's modern world, is it? I mean this is 2008 and surely the Russian State and Army has moved on from foreign adventures like the Winter War, Poland and the Baltic States, haven't they?

There has been some interesting discussions going on there, some just don't like to get out and about of certain forums, ya know......?

Cheers, the more "in general" places members are free to express their opinions and pics the better I say.

Cheers

I still can't see the logic of allowing OT threads in that forum, JML started one there yet it was moved, there are at least five other threads related to the Georgian conflict remaining!

Why move one but not the others?

Question a.b.

Why are you so worried about this, I think Alex and a couple others can have a thread or two on this subject in a Russian forum, be it WW II related or not.

Cheers, just curious is all.
