Yes, interesting to get some background other than what the news stations seem to provide (i.e., not a lot).
Thanks.

Yes, thanks for the link BP and to Mr. Morelock for writing it.
I read this right after you posted it last night and can't believe it is still the most information I have seen or heard about this event so far.
This has certainly taken away from the traditional Olympic truce. Bush & Putin obviously aren't communicating very well in Beijing. Unless this is about getting oil prices back up?

Informative article. Helped me get a better idea of the whole deal.

Of the two . . .
I liked Jerry's article better. More informative and less partisan than Peters.

Rather surprisingly, oil is now hovering around 117USD. It's not really going up by that much. I had expected oil prices to jump too, but it's not.
One possibility is that the market does not believe that this conflict will be a prolonged one, and that oil flow will not be severely affected.
Good point about the Olympic true. I have already mentioned in another thread that China is not happy with Russia because it chooses to humiliate China at the Olympics by launching a war, instead of observing the Olympic truce (which, to be fair, has always been observed more in its breach).
And also as I have mentioned in another thread, I believe that Bush had been fooled by Putin when they met in Beijing, with the assurance that Russia was only interested in keeping Georgia out of South Ossetia. That was why he did not make a stronger stance at the beginning. The fact that he is in Beijing at the Olympics, instead of being at the White House with full access to all the national security structure, might also have tempered his response in those crucial first 24 hours.
