Canberra class amphibious assault ships

Quote:
The Canberra class ships will be the largest warships ever operated by the Royal Australian Navy and will displace up to 7,000 tonnes more than the RAN's last aircraft carrier, HMAS Melbourne. Each of the ships will be able to carry an infantry battalion.
What I find interesting is to read how these large ships will only be equipped with four 25mm Rafael Stabilized Deck Guns (Naval Bushmaster M242) No anti aircraft or anti missile protection at all, the RAN believes that the new Hobart class destroyers and Royal Australian Air Force aircraft will be sufficient to protect the Canberras from attack.

No, I think it's suppose to be an impression of the Army's new armed reconnaissance helicopter, the Eurocopter Tiger.

Still better then most ship board gun systems depending on what kit you get to load it.

An armed helicopter is not going to stop something like a SUNBURN, which is the whole point of close-in defence systems like RAM and ESSM.

EDIT: Canberra and Adelaide are terrible names, btw. We need a new Australia pronto.

Amphibious Vehicles are slower, less efficient and carry less. "old Style" Landing craft like that have been used in southern Iraq since the invasion, so they most defiantly do still have a place in modern warfare.

We use a highly modified version of the LCM-8 landing crafts, and currently evaluating a new waterjet propulsion craft. As Listy has said, some old designs are still quite useful for their purpose.

I agree on your point about having a CIWS.

Not sure CIWS will help you much against a Sunburn. RAM might be useful if acclerates fast enough. ESSM and system takes alot of room.

I cannot see the RAN or the USN land in the teeth of the kind of an opposite without doing alot of suppression first.

remember you posting about these ships a while back mate, interesting that the Navy version of the new NH-90 assault helicopters will maintain the same camoflage scheme as the army helos, only " Navy " will replace "Army " on the side of the epinage..

One thing if you think about talking to me on the early lcms please don't confuse the mark 1s with the mark 3s that the Americans were inclined to use they looked like a garbage skip with Dr: Who's telephone booth on top!! lcm1.

..for those of you who dont know what the Canberra class is suppose to replace, some quick info..

HMAS KANIMBLA was built for the United States Navy as USS Saginaw and was commissioned into the Royal Australian Navy in August 1994. She has under-gone extensive modifications for her new role as a helicopter capable amphibious transport ship.

KANIMBLA's primary role is to transport, land and support a force of up to 450 personnel, their vehicles and equipment. KANIMBLA is fitted with a helicopter hangar capable of supporting up to four Army Black Hawk or three Navy Sea King helicopters. Army landing craft can also be carried on the forward flight deck to provide ship-to-shore transport. Accessed through a stern door, storage space is available on the vehicle deck for Army vehicles and other large items of equipment.

The ship has operations and planning rooms and a comprehensive array of communications equipment to support joint operations. KANIMBLA is fitted with the largest and most comprehensive medical facilities in the Fleet, with a 40-bed hospital incorporating full surgical and recovery facilities.

KANIMBLA is the second RAN ship to carry the name. KANIMBLA I was a fast cruiser requisitioned and converted to an armed merchant cruiser for the Royal Navy during World War I I . In 1943, she was further converted to an infantry landing ship and commissioned into the RAN.

Laid Down:
Launched: 7 February 1970
Commissioned: 29 August 1994 (RAN)
Displacement: 8534 tonnes
Length: 159.2 metres
Beam: 21.2 metres
Armament: 1 x 20mm Phalanx Mk15 close-in weapon system
6 x 12.7mm Machine guns
Main Machinery: 6 x ALCO V16 diesel engines, 2750 HP each, 3 engines per shaft
Speed: 22 knots
Ship's Company: 23 Naval Officers, 2 Army Officers, 197 sailors, 18 soldiers and 400 embarked forces
Cargo Capability: 2 x LCM8 landing craft
4 x Black Hawk or 3 x Sea King helicopters
955 square metres of useable tank deck space

i see the HMAS Kanimbla tied up at Stoke Hills Wharf a lot up here, and she isnt that big a ship, but certainly she is, and until the commissioning of the Canberra class, the most complete warship of her type in this part of the world. ( excluding any US navy ships of course..)
