Yes, a fine tank indeed for its time and the chassis proved highly reliable and adaptable. The PzKpfw IV isn't my outright favourite WW2 German tank (guess which one is ) but it's definitely in the 'very well liked' category. Within my 1/35 scale model kit collection I have no less than 11 Panzer 4's, each a slightly different variant of course.

Eh, built I assume!

From memory, wasn't there about twelve variants built?

The nine basic designated tank variants were Ausf. A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H and J but the F was produced in two 'sub variants'; F1 and F2, differing in armament (short or long gun) which means you could count ten. However, there is next to naff all difference between the F2 and the early G which subsequently made the F2 designation effectively 'redundant'. Furthermore, with rebuilds and retrofits the boundaries between one Ausfuhrung and the next in a number of instances can become a little blurry to the observer sometimes!

Panther...do you think overall Germany would have been better off if it had just mass produced the cheaper costing Pzkpfw IV (L75 versions of course) and Sturmgeschutz instead of less numbers of Panthers and Tigers?

If you dig into the archives there has been plenty of threads about that, but Tigers were slightly different from the list you chose... these were break through tanks, never to be mass produced.

Should this thread be stickied? It's similar to the Tiger tank thread, but for another tank.

I don't think it would have affected the outcome of the war, nor even significantly lengthened/shortened it if that's what you mean. That said, I still reckon it would have been more 'ideal' to standardize on a single proven medium tank design, and stick with it, much like the Soviets with their T-34 or the USA with their M4 Sherman - had the Germans believed themselves to be in a position to do so. Trouble is, it wasn't that straightforward for them. I could go on (if you really want me to), but as AB says this subject has been flogged over a number of times on these forums already.

EDIT: OK cougar1 and guys, got approval from one of the 'higher ups' at forum HQ and this thread has been 'stickied' as requested.
