Pervitin: Hitler's Multivitamin

Pervitin was a "multivitamin" that was widely distributed to German troops during WWII to give them an "energy boost". Fallschirmjaeger detachment "Granit" received vials of Pervitin just prior to embarking on the mission to capture fortress Eben Emael in Belgium in May 1940. This turned out to be one of the most celebrated air assault missions in history with German paratroops fighting like fanatics and defeating a force 15 times their size. German tankers and Luftwaffe fliers received Pervitin-laced chocolate rations (Panzerschokolade and Fliegerschokolade).

Trouble is Pervitin was not a mutlivitamin but 100% crystal meth.

Hitler was on a steady diet of "Pervitin" which was prescribed to him by his personal doctor Morell. We'll never learn the effects the drug had on his body but it's clear that by the end of the war Hitler's health was ruined with Parkinson's-like shaking seen in meth abusers. He was also mentally unstable and had explosive temper.

German magazine Spiegel has a story: http://www.spiegel.de/international/...354606,00.html

So Hitler was nothing more than a junkie? And so were a good lot of German soldiers? Wow.

That might be partially true or completely true. Morell would probably assess Hitler's wrecked health and diagnose exhaustion due to job stress. Crystal meth users look like zombies with teeth falling out and stuff. You bet they look like exhausted from job stress.

Well, Hitler did look at lot like zombie, I hear, and was obviously deranged by 1945. He did show alot of the symptoms of a meth addict. Perhaps he wasn't addicted, but he did have it every day.

Scary really that we only won due to the fact he was getting a little bit extra with his vitamins.

At the start of the war he was making some good calls, with sound decisions, then he went into loopy Fruit and nut cake mode and contributed greatly to Germany's loss.

He started taking these in 1940...and a year later he invaded the Soviet Union...I'll let you draw your own conclusions from this.

History is full of these stories. Mickey Mantle's physician once gave him speed for a skin wound and it turned into a full on infection that kept him from competing for the homerun record in 1961. Later this doctor lost his license. The sad thing is that Mantle really thought his doctor was giving him something to help him. Of course, I guess the doc thought he was helping as well.

Mountain Man has disabled reputation
There is a book about Hitler's personal quack...er...physician... which is fascinating reading. It seems that Hitler was addicted to medications, period. He took stuff to go to sleep, stuff to wake up, and a host of other questionable concoctions for anything that occurred to him. I have often wondered if he was a closet Munchausen's. He was also insistent on instant greatification, dictating that injectable forms would be used wherever possible. None of that sissy "swallowing" stuff for Der Fuhrer.

As far as I know, Hitler did indeed have Parkinson's, but chronic addiction to speed makes it hard to differentiate his symptoms. Additionally, there is a lot of anecdotal history strongly suggesting that he may have been suffering the symptoms of tertiary neurosyphillis on top of everything else. We do know that after the bomb went off, he went downhill fast. His final moments on film, decorating the children in the Bunker garden, always make me wonder how he even got up the Bunker stairs.

As for Morell, I wouldn't have let him near my pets. Of course, Himmler was addicted to deep massage, especially the gastric area, for his chronially severe gastric pains, and the rest of the heirarchy were equally bats. About the only thing they didn't subscribe to was the wearing of crystals...
