Shiloh Battlefield Hike

On November 8, Dr Tim Smith, former Shiloh park ranger and now history professor at University of Tennessee - Martin, will lead a twelve-mile hike covering the movements of Chalmers's Brigade at the Shiloh battlefield. The cost is $30, which includes lunch. The hike has been organized under the auspices of the Shiloh Discussion Group.

Below is a link to the hike announcement:

http://shilohdiscussiongroup.com/ind...with-tim-2014/

Below is a link to the payment method:

http://shilohdiscussiongroup.com/ind...link-for-hike/

I am planning to attend the hike and may walk a shorter hike on November 9 (I am presently thinking of following the movements of S.A.M Wood's Brigade on the First Day of the battle).

Hope to you there!

Seminar in the Woods - Chickamauga Chattanooga National Military Park

The Chickamauga Chattanooga National Military Park Study Group will hold its annual Seminar in the Woods on March 6 and 7, 2015. David Powell, author of The Chickamauga Campaign: A Mad Irregular Battle, The Maps of Chicakamauga, and Failure in the Saddle, and park Chief Historian Jim Logan will lead the tours.

On Friday, March 6, the Seminar participants will take a bus will to Resaca, which for a nearly week in September 1863, was the Army of Tennessee’s railhead while the Confederate army was concentrated at LaFayette. Bragg’s logistics in 1863, the importance of the railroad, and the first steps taken by the Confederates to defend this location will be discussed.

The 1864 battle of Resaca will be discussed, and the new state park covering that battle will be explored.

This will be a day-long tour, stopping for lunch, probably in Dalton. Pre-registration Fee: $45 Due by February 1st

Send to (and make checks payable to):
Dave Powell
522 Cheyenne Drive
Lake In The Hills IL 60156

Please also note that this fee is NON-REFUNDABLE after February 1st, 2014.

On-site Sign up Fee: $50

Saturday Morning: 8:30 a.m. to Noon. Liddell Attacks, September 19th
Saturday morning will be in the vicinity of Winfrey Field, to explore the developing fight on September 19th. The primary focus will be on St. John Liddell’s counter-attack against Baird’s division.

Saturday Afternoon: 1:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. John B. Turchin on September 19.
Turchin’s fight in Brock Field, and then his counter-attack westward along the corridor of the Brotherton Road in response to A. P. Stewart’s breakthrough at about 4:00 p.m will be the subject of Saturday afternoon's hike.

The Saturday events are free.

I attended the 2012 Seminar in the Woods and thoroughly enjoyed it. Messrs Powell and Logan are very knowledgeable on the battles there, and many of the participants evinced a deep knowledge of Chickamauga. I met the estimable Hellboy30 there (and even conned him into buying me lunch on the Friday bus tour!).

I am hoping to attend this year's Seminar in the Woods and hope to see some of you there.

Perryville Hikes in May

Darryl Smith and Chuck Lott will lead hikes at the Perryville (KY) Battlefield State Historic Site on May 15 and 16, 2015.

The Friday hike will follow the route of the Dry Canteen Trail, a now-defunct Boy Scout hike. This hike follows the route of Alexander McDowell McCook's Federal First Corps from Mackville to the battlefield.

On Saturday, May 16, Messrs Smith and Lott will lead a morning and an afternoon walk on the battlefield.

On the Saturday evening, Stuart Saunders, author of Perryville Under Fire and Maney's Confederate Brigade at the Battle of Perryville), will be give a talk on the aftermath of the Perryville battle.

Details can be found at

http://ohioatperryville.blogspot.com...d-details.html

I have hiked with Messrs Smith and Lott the last two years and have found that they are extremely knowledgeable about the battle. Hellboy30 and I shared a dinner table with Darryl last week while attending the Seminar in the Woods at the Chickamauga battlefield.

I am particularly looking forward to hiking the Dry Canteen Trail. I walked on its inaugural day back in 1961, and my father played a major role in creating and establishing it.

I hope that some of the correspondents to this August Forum will attend this event.

Shiloh Battlefield Hike

On November 7, Dr Tim Smith, former Shiloh park ranger and now history professor at University of Tennessee - Martin, will lead a new edition of the annual Epic Hike with Tim Smith. This year it will be a ten- to twelve-mile hike, a mostly chronological tour of various artillery positions during the Battle of Shiloh, in which he will discuss each unit, and explain what was taking place at that location as well as in the surrounding area during the battle. The hike will cover events from both days. The hike has been organized under the auspices of the Shiloh Discussion Group.

Details can be found at

http://shilohdiscussiongroup.com/ind...h-tim-weekend/

The website initially states that I will be leading a hike on November 8 entitled In the Footsteps of Trabue's Brigade. Unfortunately, work has intruded on my leisure activities and I will be unable to attend the Epic Hike this year. I attended last year's hike following the route of Chalmer's Brigade and it was excellent. I led a shorter hike myself the next day, focusing on Sterling Alexander Martin's Brigade's attack on the Federal position from dawn on April 6 to the fight at the Crossroads / Water Oaks Pond, which was not so excellent (or epic).

2016 Seminar in the Woods - Chickamauga - Chattanooga NMP

The details of the 2016 Seminar in the Woods have been announced.

https://chickamaugablog.wordpress.com/

As is customary, the Seminar will have a bus tour on Friday, March 11, 2016 with this year's tour covering Feint, Deception and Maneuver: Union Operations north of Chattanooga. The tour will visit historical sites associated with Wagner, Hazen, Minty and Wilder’s operations north of Chattanooga, prior to the battle of Chickamauga.

On Saturday, March 12, the Seminar will have two car caravans on the Chickamauga battlefield (I expect that these will be more hiking than driving)

Car Caravan – Saturday Morning, 8:30 to Noon: Van Cleve enters the fight. and will explore Van Cleve’s Union division, and the September 19th fighting in the woods between Brock and Brotherton Fields.

Car Caravan – Saturday Afternoon, 1:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.: Breckinridge attacks! and will explore John C. Breckinridge’s September 20th attack that turned Thomas’s flank and penetrated to Kelly Field.

The Seminar is led by Jim Ogden, who is on the staff of the Chickamauga - Chattanooga National and whose knowledge on the Late Unpleasantness is encylcopedic, and Dave Powell, author of several well-received studies of the Battle of Chickamauga.

Work commitments permitting, I shall attend. I expect to meet Hellboy30 there and hope to see others, as well.
