McSorely's, situated in a neighborhood dripping with history dating back to the days of Peter Stuyvesant, claims to be the oldest continuously operating saloon in New York City, and the oldest continuously operating Irish pub outside of Ireland. By looking at the decor, I'd say the place hasn't changed a bit: the sawdust remains unchanged, as do the dead cockroaches petrified to the faded wallpaper. McSorely's itself was historic by being the last male-only saloon in the City. In 1970, progress unfortunately impinged on their testosterone haven when the US Supreme Court overturned their single-sex policy. Not long afterwards McSorely's installed air conditioning. All in all, it's a miserable place for a drink, but I've never regretted bending my elbow in her dank spaces -- and that I've done plenty.
Edited to add: that's why I had to ask if Irish pubs could count as British, because for much of McSorely's history, Orangemen and John Bulls were decidedly unwelcome.

I've found real Irish pubs, populated by real Irishmen, far more friendly and inviting establishments than Irish-American pubs, populated by Irish-Americans. Irish-Americans always seem to feel the need to prove their "Irish-ness," often by getting rip-roaring drunk, shouting obnoxiusly, puking, pissing, and brawling. In my experience, real Irishmen, at least those in the Greater New York area, don't feel the need to prove their Irish-ness. They're a lot more mellow, and generally friendlier, and thus make good bar-mates. It's that kind of relaxed and warm atmosphere that Donovan's Pub provides: just a bunch a good working Joe's (and Josephine's) coming together for a good drink and a good time. Is there anything in the world more desirable than that?

Good beer and traditional food. Also let dogs in so good for a Sunday roast after walking the dog in near by Great Windsor Park.

Is it a picturesque establishment, or does it not merit a visual representation -- like British dentistry.
Sorry. It's the eternal juvenile in me.

Might as well end this session with perhaps the most famous pub:
