Please remember these fine boys who made the ultimate sacrifice - Ranger Team 1-6 Papa Company - 75th Rangers. The music is real fine too, but it's the faces of the men....:flag:

Great pictures Delta. Some of the best I've seen actually, great history. Does it feel like yesterday or a lifetime ago now?

Copen - I can still smell the air there. When my grandchildren say they want to be soldiers, I feel both proud yet also feel tight in the chest. War is hell but the people I met there, the time period (60's), everything, I wouldn't exchange it for the world.

Indeed, it is one experience which I can honestly say that I would not trade for a million dollars, but that I would not do again for another million.

My son just entered Army Basic a week ago. Got my first letter from him tonight. He's finding out there's a whole new world out there than the protected one he grew up in.

Like you, I am extremely proud he has enlisted & it's doubtful if he'll be put in harm's way anytime soon, but my chest tightens when I also recall my experiences and my MOS wasn't suppose to see what I did either. Just wearing the uniform at times will automatically paint a bulls eye on your back.

Great video Paul. Those were the days or "the times" as we called it then. The series of events - cold war, Vietnam, civil rights, protest and free love - at that time we so powerful that it is hard to imagine it ever coming close to that ever again. I guess that is good for a many a person but for me, life had a real buzz in the air.
Thanks for bring back some of those feelings with your post,

D1

I think we have to admit, D1, that life always has a buzz for the young - but, still, that decade probably had a more energized, rich texture than most. I think we are the better for having lived it (and are apparently still living it! ).

MIII good flick. Yeah, that was definitely a song of the times, and it had actual music and lyrics unlike the crud of today.

RadioResearcher, surprised you got your security rating with that membership.

Not to worry, Boss - in an age of Leftist campus movements, YAF was on the Right - conservative and very anti-communist. William F. Buckley, Jr. was one of the original sponsors. If anything, this would have actually helped me get my clearance!

Naff - It was a popular song but I think they tend to over use it when it comes to movies or t.v. programs about the war. Despite that, any song that takes ones mind back to the times and that comes from that period of time is a very valid choice. The Stones were very popular over there with the troops as they were at home.

Cool What's that sound?

Here's a small part of "Dispatches" by Micheal Herr that mentions this song. Herr wrote this at Khe Sanh with the 26th Marines (my Uncle David was with them). He was an imbedded journalist at the time and spent most of his time with Marines, Airborne, and LRRPs.

The radio delivered a dramatized warning against losing pay vouchers and currency-exchange slips, and then the disc jockey came on again.
"This one's a request for Hard-Core Paul and the Fire Team, and for our groovy CO, Fred the Head...."

"Hey, Mayhew, turn it on up."
"Hey, cocksuck, you just tol' me to turn it off."
"Come on, man, that's an outtasight song."

Mayhew turned it up. It still wasn't very loud, but it filled the bunker. It was a song that had been on the radio a lot that winter.

There's something happening here
What it is ain't exactly clear
There's a man with a gun over there
Telling me that I've got to beware
I think it's time we stopped, children
What's that sound?
Everybody look what's goin' down

"Know what I heard over at the Captain's hooch?" Mayhew said. "Some kid tol' me the Cav's comin' in here."

"Right," someone said. "They're comin' tomorrow."
"What time tommorow?"
"All right," Mayhew said. "Don't believe me. The was a clerk. He's over to the TOC yesterday and heard 'em talking."
"What's Cav gonna do here? Make this a ****ing parking lot for their helicopters?"

The Marine did not like the Cav, the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), they liked them even less than they like the rest of the Army, and at the same time the members of the Cav were beginning to feel as though their sole mission in Vietnam was to bail out Marines in trouble.

Sadly, Mayhew did not come home. He signed a four month extension near the end of his tour, and was killed by an RPG.

MilitaryHistory is on the path to success [1-99]
Remember motown had a huge influence on the army...15% of the soldiers who gave their lives in the war were African-American.

A slight exaggeration --

During the ten-year period of the war, 7,257 African-Americans died in Vietnam, or 12.5 percent of the KIAs, slightly under their proportion in the population of draft-aged males.

[Source: Stolen Valor by B.G Burkett and based on DoD casualty records.]

I agree with you on MoTown being a big influence, however - as an element of the classic Soul of the era - which, IMHO, was best presented by Stax and Atlantic artists (see my 13 Jan 08 post on this thread).
