For me music has always been a reference point. "Where were you when XXXX song was on the charts?" kind of thing.

What I refer to as Viet Nam music were those hits I heard while over there. "Monday, Monday." was my first tour song. "Tiny Dancer" (Elton John) was my second tour.

"Memories are made of this...."

Very true Gunny and I find today, certain songs put me at an exact place in time and memories flood back in. Possibly on R&R, in the base lounge, sitting watching the sun set having a '33', coming down off a 'walk in the park' and especially for me, a buddies favorite song when he was gone.

Thanks for mentioning the songs so far. Hope to hear more

Can't tell you why but I just don't remember it being played over there.

NEVER FORGET

1st CAV (Airmobile) first arrives in Vietnam in 1965 =

'These Boots are Made for Walking' (Nancy Sinatra)

1st CAV (Airmobile) first engages NVA Regulars in force =

'We Can Work it Out' (The Beatles) *

* a brand new Beatles song blaring from portable radios, playing on the Saigon-based Armed Forces Radio Network, as we processed our Battle of IA DRANG-1965 hero Wounded & Killed in Action casualties at Pleiku Airstrip.

Just for the LOVE of it.

I already wrote "Green, Green Grass of Home", but I'll also say Merle Haggard's "Silver Wings".
