Thumbs up Music of the Vietnam War Era

We have talked about some of the songs we liked or that were popular on the airways during the war before BUT, if you had to name one, whether it was a favorite or it just takes you back to the Nam, what would it be?

Fortunate Son, The End, All Along The Watchtower, We Got To Get Out Of This Place...really a tough call, but I think that my favorite is Nancy Sinatra's These Boots Are Made For Walking, not sure exactly why, but that's the most evocative for me.

Easy.
The absolute most heard/played song in any club, bar or the ubiquitous tape deck was "We Gotta Get Outta This Place."

"Green, Green Grass of Home" was played just about everywhere and always seemed pretty popular.

I personally would have to select from 1969 - Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Fortunate Son". Perhaps for me, this song told the story of so many who fought in the Nam making sacrifices while others, young American just boys like us, but who because of who their families were and the money they had, avoided their 'duty'. When a country decides to fight, all lives should be equal in cost. This too me, was what was wrong with the Vietnam war.

Cheers,
D1

OK, so I wasn't there, but if I had to pick one (of many) that evokes thoughts of the Vietnam war then I would say:

Jefferson Airplane

There are so many great songs from that period. I was just a kid and to young for the war. But all the songs listed bring back memories of the time, it was the first TV war.

For me it was "Monday. Monday." (Mammas and Papas) Don't know why, it has always stuck with me.

I did that song with Big Nickel and the Three Pennies my neighborhood rock band.

I agree with the others -- there was a lot of good music then and a lot of it being mentioned here on this list.

It was and still is one of my favorites, but I never thought of it as a Vietnam war song.
